Functional Buttons on MTM/Bespoke Suits?

So if you're having a suit made, should you aks for functional sleeve buttons? My local tailor who is making me an MTM suit actually discouraged it. Said it was a waste of time and money. But, then again, it would distinguish the suit somewhat from OTR. Any thoughts?

sure functional buttons arent really practical, but it's one of those artisanal features that give men wood

There was a time when that was true but now it's become commonplace for people to have working buttons cut on OTR (these same people have a tendency to go around unbuttoned).

All tailors have opinions. Not all of them are right.

Tell him that it's your suit and you want at least the lower two buttonholes opened.

The fit not the buttons should distinguish the suit from OTR.

If you want the working buttons in MTM/Bespoke or even OTR, I would get them. Some people prefer to leave some buttons open, and some prefer to leave them closed regardless of whether they are wearing MTM/Bespoke or not.

Some may prefer to keep the buttons open. But I would consider that gauche and everything I've ever read on SF concurs.

Of course, if someone wants to keep their buttons open they can. I guess they can keep their fly open too, if they want!

Not everything you read here concurs, because there are some men (including me) that view open button holes as a simple preference.

I view open buttons on jacket sleeves as just another way of wearing a jacket more casually. It is like wearing a shirt in a casual fashion, with 1 or 2 collar buttons open, or leaving the cuffs unbuttoned, or like leaving the front buttons open on a jacket.

Of course, there is nothing stylish or casual about leaving the fly buttons open though

It makes no difference as you will likely never open them. The only reason for them is what he implies with his comments - not to have them would be to cut a corner. I, personally, would want my MTM to be all that it can be.

I like them and they come in very handy when you are washing your hands , or in my case I have a particular client has a stringent dress code where jackets are on at all times and the buttons hit the keyboard or have a tendency to pick ink stains.
