In response to a certain other thread, I thought it might be nice to celebrate some of the kindnesses that friends have done for us out of the blue.

When I was in California, I house sat at a friends place with my GF. My friends were out of the US, called us to check in, and then (unknown to me) called a local delivery service to drop off dinner, movies and some popcorn. This all happened while me and the GF were between jobs and "thrifty" with our spending.

Unexpected, nice and fun.

I've just sent a copy of "Little Manhattan" to a elementary school crush for Valentine's Day. She lives about 1500km and I only infrequently see her (still good friends though). Little Manhattan is about two 10-year-olds falling in love. I'm hoping she receives it with the same humour I send it.

The completely unexpected are so much more fun. I can't barely remember what I received for Christmas, but the little things are much more memorable.

Last night I met up with a friend I haven't seen in three years. We were talking about the twists and turns our lives had taken and he said how a copy of Thoreau's Walden I had given him when he went backpacking had changed the way he looked at the world. I had completely forgotten about it and it warmed me up.

Neato. What, however, is the mushroom? Is it a key fob or something?

I'm not entirely sure; your guess seems a reasonable one.

Once, two friends decided to surprise me at the airport to pick me up when I was flying back to college. The airport was a bit over an hour away, and I was planning to take a bus service to the center of my college town and then a taxi to my dorm. Because of weather and mechanical problems, we landed six hours late, at 2 AM, so there was no way I would have been able to get back to my dorm except that there they were, waiting for me at the gate (this dates me), having checked the arrival time and come on out anyway.

That might be more than friendship -- closer to sainthood.

When saying goodbye to my friends' girlfriends at parties and the like, I often ask the girlfriends to give them a goooooood time when they get home, and then say hello from me.
