Tried to call Customs, was disconnected twice. I would really like to know once and for all instead of wondering if the next time I do this, I'll end up wasting upwards of 150 euros.

Fab,

it doesn't matter what they tell you on the phone - somebody with a high school education, making less than a correctional officer, possibly at the end of an 8 hour shift, who doesn't read any forign languages, will make the call in the airport.

you might as well flip a coin.

Sigh. You're probably right. I guess I'll try to keep my potential losses low.

My plan is, if I get caught, to retrieve my Swiss Army knife from my suicase, cut slices of foie gras, pull out crackers or bread, and pass canapÃ

I suspect the foie gras will suddenly become a lesser problem at that point.

Oh, but I do plan to share with the guards and customs officers.

But really, at that point, you have your suitcase, can't you pull anything you want out of it (then promptly return it) before it is placed on your next plane?
