I'm glad to see this unbelievably powerful album included. People deride the 80s for having worthless music, but this is just another example of some of the brilliance that was there. I can remember hearing this album when I was in junior high, and I still listen to it now.

Perfection to be found in:

The Jam "In the City" .....altho "All Mod Cons" is considered their opus, I think their debut is a better record with its rawness.

Minor Thread "Out of Step"....this record literally changed my life

The Small Faces s/t....It's amazing how soulful Steve Mariott's singing was for a skinny lil white boy

The Kinks s/t....without this band/record the world would be a darker place musically and half of my fave bands would never exist

Suicidal Tendencies s/t.....need I explain this one?!

Go Cat Go "Let's Hear it Once again..."....the best modern rockabilly record. Sounds like it came out of 1956. Amazing live and studio recordings by the greatest modern RAB band. RIP Darren.

Johnny Burnette Rock n Roll Trio "Rock-Billy Boogie"....the greatest rockabilly record from its heyday. More energy than Elvis, grittier than Gene Vincent, rocks harder than Eddie Cochran.

The Sonics "Here are the sonics"...punk rock before the phrase ever existed.

The Wailers "Livewire"....They could have been the 'Beatles' if the Beatles never existed.

Wonderful album. The title track, in particular, is incredible. It captures wistfulness and wanderlust and heartache and just an ever so slight ray of hope so well.

Some of my favorites:

It explores a wide range of feelings and articulates tons of hopes and fears and then Only In Dreams blows your mind. Every time.

I think pitchfork said it best:

We must be lying to ourselves: There is no way this album should not be #1. Because when the riff from "Black Dog" hits you for the first time, you come face to face with God. Nothing is bigger than Led Zeppelin IV. It tears your skin and grinds away your doubt and self-hatred, freeing the rage and lust and anger of cockblocked adolescence. Listening to this album is like ******* the Grand Canyon.
Some people call "When the Levee Breaks" the album's true epic, because it sounds like the blues while "Stairway to Heaven" sounds like druids. But that was the ******* point. Zeppelin understood that you spend your days under the weight of ****, so they show you the way out with a moronized stewpot of myth, Tolkien and California daydreaming, a place where you can pray for greatness from battles you'll never fight. Zeppelin spanned it all, because they knew sometimes you wield the Hammer of the Gods and sometimes you just get the shaft. --Chris Dahlen

Say what you will, I love it. A concept record that brilliant in it's simplicity and quotidian detail. Skinner doesn't try to be a hardass or a drama queen, and it works.

Explosions In The Sky's The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place, for those who didn't know. It's difficult to describe this record, except to say that you're left with a feeling of floating into the ground.

My favorite band. The release that works best as an album is their latest, The Crane Wife but it hasn't *actually* been released yet, so there's no art (ahem.) Anyway, I'm picking Castaways basically on the strength of California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade.
