more than the artist, their body of work in one single album sometimes defines just how good they really are. here are just some of my favorites

I'm glad to see this unbelievably powerful album included. People deride the 80s for having worthless music, but this is just another example of some of the brilliance that was there. I can remember hearing this album when I was in junior high, and I still listen to it now.

I'm going to list some albums I think are "perfect":

Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Arcade Fire: Funeral
The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds
The Beastie Boys: Paul's Boutique
The Beatles: Abbey Road
The Beatles: Revolver
The Beatles: Rubber Soul
The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Beatles (White Album)
Bonnie "Prince" Billy: I See A Darkness
The Clash: London Calling
David Bowie: Low
The Fiery Furnaces: Blueberry Boat
Frank Sinatra: In the Wee Small Hours
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme
Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures
Keith Fullerton Whitman: Playthroughs
Led Zeppelin (IV)
The Microphones: The Glow Pt. 2
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue
My Bloody Valentine: Loveless
Neutral Milk Hotel: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Nick Drake: Pink Moon
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
Public Enemy: It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back
Radiohead: Kid A
Radiohead: OK Computer
The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main Street
Sigur Ros: Agaetis Byrjun
The Streets: A Grand Don't Come For Free
Sufjan Stevens: Illinoise
The Velvet Underground & Nico
Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I have a revolving list of favorites (SAW 85-92 and Pet Sounds are the only staples), but these are all albums I don't think I could ever grow tired of. Just perfection.

Perfection to be found in:

The Jam "In the City" .....altho "All Mod Cons" is considered their opus, I think their debut is a better record with its rawness.

B000006TZ9.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V51587584_.jpg

Minor Thread "Out of Step"....this record literally changed my life

B000EUA6DW.01-ALRQTBGAK6TRC._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The Small Faces s/t....It's amazing how soulful Steve Mariott's singing was for a skinny lil white boy

B000002GG7.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The Kinks s/t....without this band/record the world would be a darker place musically and half of my fave bands would never exist

B0001XLXDY.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Suicidal Tendencies s/t.....need I explain this one?!

B000007489.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V56331609_.jpg

Go Cat Go "Let's Hear it Once again..."....the best modern rockabilly record. Sounds like it came out of 1956. Amazing live and studio recordings by the greatest modern RAB band. RIP Darren.

330822.jpg

Johnny Burnette Rock n Roll Trio "Rock-Billy Boogie"....the greatest rockabilly record from its heyday. More energy than Elvis, grittier than Gene Vincent, rocks harder than Eddie Cochran.

B000001AW9.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The Sonics "Here are the sonics"...punk rock before the phrase ever existed.

B00000IR00.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The Wailers "Livewire"....They could have been the 'Beatles' if the Beatles never existed.

Wonderful album. The title track, in particular, is incredible. It captures wistfulness and wanderlust and heartache and just an ever so slight ray of hope so well.

Some of my favorites:
B000003TAW.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V61553493_.jpg

It explores a wide range of feelings and articulates tons of hopes and fears and then Only In Dreams blows your mind. Every time.

I think pitchfork said it best:
We must be lying to ourselves: There is no way this album should not be #1. If my fellow PFM writers could go to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind's memory-erasure clinic and wipe out everything related to this record and band-- the radio overplay, the Spinal Tap jokes, Robert Plant asking, "Does anybody remember laughter?"-- and hear IV again for the first time, it would be at the very top of this list. Because when the riff from "Black Dog" hits you for the first time, you come face to face with God. Nothing is bigger than Led Zeppelin IV. It tears your skin and grinds away your doubt and self-hatred, freeing the rage and lust and anger of cockblocked adolescence. Listening to this album is like ******* the Grand Canyon.
Some people call "When the Levee Breaks" the album's true epic, because it sounds like the blues while "Stairway to Heaven" sounds like druids. But that was the ******* point. Zeppelin understood that you spend your days under the weight of ****, so they show you the way out with a moronized stewpot of myth, Tolkien and California daydreaming, a place where you can pray for greatness from battles you'll never fight. Zeppelin spanned it all, because they knew sometimes you wield the Hammer of the Gods and sometimes you just get the shaft. --Chris Dahlen

Say what you will, I love it. A concept record that brilliant in it's simplicity and quotidian detail. Skinner doesn't try to be a hardass or a drama queen, and it works.

fda992c008a0b44de7795010.L.jpg

Explosions In The Sky's The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place, for those who didn't know. It's difficult to describe this record, except to say that you're left with a feeling of floating into the ground.

B00008XS4D.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1115558208_.jpg

My favorite band. The release that works best as an album is their latest, The Crane Wife but it hasn't *actually* been released yet, so there's no art (ahem.) Anyway, I'm picking Castaways basically on the strength of California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade.

Great thread acidboy.

The Rugburns agree with Otterhound.

Houses of the Holy
Was an album by Led Zeppelin
I bought it on eight track
Not on CD
Fades out in the middle
The way an eight track's s'posed to
The way an eight track's s'posed to

I got the number thirteen
Tattooed on my bicep
The thirteenth letter of the alphabet
Is the letter ";M";
Stands for marijuana
The way that it oughta
The way a letter oughta

The ";Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test";
Was a novel by Tom Wolfe
It's about taking LSD
And driving 'cross the country
Drivin' in a school bus
A school bus on LSD
The way an education oughta be

I wanna drive a school bus
Over to the Brady's
And pick up Alice
And then we'll bake some brownies
And then I'll grab Marcia
And play with her Ouija board
And talk to Mr. Brady

Houses of the Holy
Was a really bitchin' album
Bonzo kicks ass on it
And then he chokes on his vomit
The way a rock star's s'posed to die
The way a rock star's s'posed to die
The way a rock star's s'posed to die

I wanna die wasted
In a room with Eddie Vedder
We could both die together
But he'll go first
Yeah Eddie'll go first
'Cause he's more famous
More famous than the Rugburns

When you buy our coffins
Put eight tracks in 'em
Playin' Houses of the Holy
'Cause it's a really bitchin' album
Remember when I told you
Remember how it fades out
Remember when I told you
