bought a few things while in the mecca of All That Is Good, NYC.. had a great time, wanted to ask about some things i bought--

-just bought my first pair of dunhill shoes....anyone else have some, or are familiar with them? made by Poulsen & Skone, think New and Lingwood uses them, as well.

- ferragamo has some really cool sportswear, but the NYC store isn't done remodelling, and so has nothing. would like to get another casual shirt or something....where else can i find this stuff?

- got my first Marinella necktie...any other place in the USA to get them, besides bergdorf?

-is there any online store that carries Luigi Borrelli boxers? i'm an instant convert; to me, better than hanro & zimmerli, hands down. wish i would have bought more.

-STILL trying to find a great, traditional navy DB (6x2) blazer, with edge stitching on lapels and maybe even hand-stitched buttonholes, in the great British (or maybe italian) tradition. suggestions? best i've come up with is Dunhill (made by Zegna, i think...no hand-done buttonholes, tho).

thanks.

I don't know anything about the other items you mentioned, but I might be able to give you some information about shoes.

The Dunhill store in London used to have a range of shoes, maybe three years ago. They obviously didn't do too well and the whole caboodle ended up at half price in the sale. I did buy two pairs at the time; they had the Dunhill name and were made by Alfred Sargent (a good but not outstanding manufacturer, who like all the other firms produce shoes under their own and every other name). Ever since that time, the London store (later stores when they took over the former Sulka premises) has not stocked shoes.

It is only a guess, but it might be that the NY store (or the American arm) keeps shoes as their own stock; i.e. they are not in the London wholesale range. Poulsen & Skone used to be a famous London bespoke shoe house, who were in the end bought by New &  Lingwood and also had the famous George Cleverley working there (in his old age). Subsequently (after Cleverley's death) did the expert staff walk out and set up the firm George Cleverley.

Since then does N & L use the name Poulsen & Skone for their top tier of ready-to-wear shoes, made by Edward Green. N & L does not manufacturer shoes; other ranges are made by Crockett & Jones and others. I read that N & L aims to sell their shoes wholesale, as they have started to do with their shirts. That might be the case, in all probability the shoes are made by Edward Green, who also make Lauren Purple Label shoes. (Inspecting the shoes I could tell you, all manufacturers leave their particular fingerprints.) If they are Edward Green, then I believe you got yourself the best ready-to-wear shoes currently on the market.

There's a Ferragamo boutique in most major cities. Or you could try e-luxury. If you're still in New York try Sak's or Barney's. There's also a duty free store at JFK....

- got my first Marinella necktie...any other place in the USA to get them, besides bergdorf?

Adesso, Cleveland, OH area. E-mail me for contact info. Very nice people.

-is there any online store that carries Luigi Borrelli boxers? i'm an instant convert; to me, better than hanro & zimmerli, hands down. wish i would have bought more.

Try calling the store and having them ship you some more...Did you go to Borrelli's boutique on 60th? There's one in Palm Beach too.

Any way I can help contribute to the retail quests of my fellow Forum members...

hey, thanks for the info, Steve. actually, i ended up not going to some of the brand-stores like borrelli, as i was able to see such a great selection of stuff at saks men, bergdorf goodman, etc. i will look into the palm beach store, little closer to me here in GA. does the store in cleveland have a website to check out?

i WAS very disappointed with barneys, tho....looked a little like a warehouse compared with the other stores. felt cramped, and seemed like furnishings were crammed in. didn't visit the clothing floor, tho.

thanks for the info.

You really should see the Borrelli store the next time you're in nyc, as well as this small boutique around the corner which sells Attolini exclusively.

You should have checked out the Ferragamo store down here in SoHo, on Spring St. I'm assuming you only visited the one uptown on 5th.

Whoo hoo. Someone else has noticed Ferragamo. You can finda small selection of Ferragamo sportswear in many airport Harrod's stores, and most European cities have one. (Exception: Vienna is in the process of getting one, but because of that Braun has stopped carrying them, making the line unavailable there for now.)

In the US, I've yet to find anything but their shoes outside of NYC, though.

As for a blazer, Alfred Dunhill does make nice jackets (I can't tell if my grey DB Dunhill suit is made by Zegna, but I wouldn't doubt it.). Other places to look would be Brioni or perhaps Oxxford.

Peace,

JG

I believe it's 785 Fifth Avenue, off of East 59th Street. The Store is called Domenico Vacca. They're having a trunk showing right now with some hellacious Neapolitan shirtmaker.

I love Ferragamo too but unfortunately haven't seen anything but their shoes/accessories in stores, hopefully their website (it says "will be up soon") will allow me access to other things as well.

I think I've only seen Ferragamo sportswear at Ferragamo stores here in L.A. and in San Francisco. The L.A. store is in the Rodeo Drive vicinity, and the S.F. store is on the south side of Union Square, besides Macy's and the Louis Vuitton store, if I remember correctly. All noteworthy designer and upper-tier stores in S.F. are in the same area, from Wilkes-Bashford to Neiman Marcus to Agnes B to Marc Jacobs and Jil Sander in Maiden Lane. The Saks men's store is really terrific - better in atmosphere, layout, and product mix than Neiman's, and much better than the Macy's menswear department, which is stocked with mediocre brands and has all the ambience of a public restroom.

However, and Steve B. lives in S.F., and so would know better than myself, there are quite a number of off the beaten path stores in S.F. well worth the trip, although in a more streetwear/vintage vein than in the Union Square area. AB Fits, a terrific jeans specialist, comes to mind.

Ferragamo sportswear can be found at Neiman's and Saks and I think i've seen it online too at eluxury and neimanmarcus.com. I've never been a big fan of their sportswear or their shoes (I'm a die-hard wearer of A. Testoni.) But occasionally I look for their sportswear, as it has some good stuff.

I'm surprised you didn't like Barney's. I love that store and it serves as a good complement to Bergdorfs because they sell some edgier clothes and brands not found at Bergdorf's. Barneys is the only department store in the city that sells Prada. And they have a big selection of Helmut Lang.

Hope this helps a little.

Thrac:

Thanks for the info on the boutique. I thought Vacca was now in Sak's, replacing Flusser. Am I incorrect?

Also re SF. I disagree with LAG and would give the edge to Neiman's for men's depts. I actually think the best Sak's men's store is in Chicago. I like it even better than the flagship in NYC, but it's a tough call. SF is great, but was even better before the general mgr left to take a similar position in NY. Oddly enough, the Saks in San Antonio is my next favorite after these three. And the Neiman's in SF is my favorite in the country. I confess to a lack of objectivity, however. I know the clothing manager, and we have the same tastes. He and all his staff are really great to work with.

My friend was raving about the Neiman Marcus store in SF. What's the name of the Louis Boston type store in SF? I've heard it's amazing.

You are probably thinking of Wilkes-Bashford, which is really an amazing store- and surprisingly attitude free.

I disagree with LAG and would give the edge to Neiman's for men's depts.

This probably has to do with our different tastes. I'll concede that the suit selection at Neiman's is unbeatable - the selection ranges from Jil Sander to Prada to Brioni - just amazing. And the sportswear selection from Brioni and Zegna are expansive. Even the "modern" sportswear section is very good, and considerably larger than that at Saks. The selection of Miu Miu (my favorite diffusion line, by far, and imo often better than the Prada mainline or many other mainlines) is terrific. However, I find that Saks has a more interesting product mix, especially on the designer floor. Even when they carry the same designers, the Sak's selection just features more off-kilter, funky pieces. They don't have Paul Smith though, while Neiman's does...
