Not sure how things are were you live, but technical consultants generally don't wear suits to work. I work as a senior consultant in software development, and jeans/chinos, dress shirts and the occational blazer/sports coat is typically the most dressed up anyone will get around here. If you have a nice fitting shirt and some decent (dress) shoes you should be OK. I don't see any purpose in spending money on a suit. It's better to buy clothes that you can also wear once you get the job.

For 99% of most jobs, a gray or navy suit with a white shirt and solid color tie, you can't go wrong. Don't over complicate things.

I usually wear a mtm 2 button peak lapel dark gray suit with a nice white shirt and a solid color tie that has some color. I believe last time it was a sky blue tie.

I was recently called back to meet the remaining few members of a big law group for a lateral position. I wore a Turnbull & Asser 2/3 roll dark gray glen plaid, white french cuff shirt, repp stripe tie in my law school colors and alden cordovan cap toes. I am confident my attire had nothing to do with the success I had in my first round of interviews other than say "this guy is not an idiot."

I don't screw around with interviews. Solid blue suit, white shirt, no FC, no BD collar, blue and white pindot tie, black shoes, no pocket square. Second interview would do the same, only with a dark charcoal pinstripe and appropriately matched tie. Change up the shoes and shirt, but still the same restrictions.

Better to err on the side of caution unless you are certain that your style will be appreciated. Gradually introduce the fancy stuff after you're onboard and comfortable that you're going to be staying for a while.
