Do you prefer cap toes or wingtips?

I'm looking for a new dress shoe and it seems like wingtips are coming back into style where I live. I have always opted for cap toes because of the cleaner look and the ease of polishing.

If I go with a cap toe, I'll probably get the ECCO Austin cap toe or the Johnston & Murphey Melton. I have no idea about a good wingtip. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Personally, I prefer wingtips on most occasions. However, they can sometimes look fake or silly if they're on a cheap shoe. Captoes are probably on the safer side, but I like wingtips more.

I tend to like wingtips a wee bit more, although I think it would depend on the shoe.

What are you getting them for? What's the context or occasion? This may help you decide on the Ecco vs the Johnston & Murphy. The Ecco will certainly be a more comfortable walking shoe, while I think the Johnston & Murphy is more elegant.

Depends on the purpose. Plain captoes look really boring to me now, almost awkward in the way it breaks up the foot. Still have a nice black pair for suits, though. Wingtips can look overly formal but if the broguing isn't out of control they're fine. My preference is neither: a plain toe (no cap) with a medallion. Difficult to find but gives me what I want: formal, visual detail without going overboard, and (usually) a sleek profile.

Historically I have had a preference for full brogues ,(wingtips). But for some reason I am starting to prefer semi-brogues, or half-brogues. I don't know why. Wingtips look too informal, too busy. All that broguing is a distraction.

On less formal shoes, such as a derby, I like a wingtip design. I like the Alden wingtip blucher (derby) in tan. I wear them with cords or chinos.

I prefer cap toes. Not a big full brogue fan.

For work I prefer cap toe.

For more sportive and louder outfits full brogues (including a long wing!).

I like & own several pairs of full brogue, semi brogue & plain cap toe shoes. Each has their own charm.

There was a time tho, that I searched exclusively for wingtips. That thirst was quenched with the acquisition of my Falkirks (see avatar)
