Do you ever get dirty looks from people about the way you dress?

My wife and me went to see Transformers 3 opening night. I had just come from the office, so I was in a suit and tie. A drunk guy thought we had skipped ahead of him in line and started screaming at my wife. I got between them and told him to back-off. He started raging at me: "You think just because you wear a suit you get to boss me around? I got news for you, buddy: we ain't at work no more. I don't get your mail and I don't get your coffee. Capiche?" It went a little further and eventually security came to remove him, while escorting my wife and I to the front of the line. Pretty funny how that worked out, actually . . .

Yeah, it wasn't a good movie. I generally hate the Bay-created Transformers, but I loved the original Transformers so much as a child that I'm compelled to watch the live-action films.

In general, no. At work I do get bemused expressions at times though. I work tech and for most of my coworkers "dressed up" involves putting a collared shirt on or pants instead of shorts. Nice shoes, slacks, and a sport coat (or a suit) are fairly unheard of but I wear them most days. Some of the folks that don't know me think I work in sales...which we don't have in this office.

It doesn't bother me. I don't wear what I do to impress them or try and get ahead. I let the quality of my work do that. I wear it because it makes me feel more professional and therefor more productive. They might not understand but it works for me.

I don't get dirty looks, but get a lot of comments.

I work in an industry famous for overweight nerdy guys who consider a pair of khakis and a blue shirt dressed up, so when I wear a jacket or a tie I get comments. Usually the comments are in the form of questions like "What are you all dressed up for?" or "When's the job interview?".

I do dress down for work; I don't wear suits and the jackets are more casual. I just hate that the norm is sloppy, and I get commented on because I put in a little bit of an effort.

At school, yes. I go to a college in SoCal near the beach so it's pretty much tees + shorts + sandals when it's hot and jeans + a sweater + sneakers when it's cold. That's why I just wear beat up jeans and blank J.Crew tees to school. I even got funny looks for wearing Sperry's back when no one wore them. I wear the 'fancier clothes' (peacoats, dressy looking shoes, cardigans etc.) outside of school.


The looks could be anything though.. admiration, disgust etc. I don't know, I just know it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable when I can see someone eyeing me up and down. I know I shouldn't care what other people are thinking of me but I can't help it.

Never get dirty looks, but I would get weird looks if I overdressed. Still a student, so at most I wear a collared sport shirt and jeans (untucked shirt) on a daily basis. Going out I'll tuck in my shirt, but otherwise that is as fancy as it gets.

If I were to wear slacks and a dress shirt even with a sweater over top on a daily basis people would think I'm mentally handicapped. Perhaps at a different institution it would be the norm. There's a difference between looking good and looking out of place.

That happens quite a lot. And I am not that well dressed compared to some people on here. I just make an effort...
