Do shell cordovan shoes fit more lose than their respective calfskin models?

On an Allen Edmonds 5 last for the Strand (calf skin). I got an pair of AE Jeffersons (a 5 last as well) and they fit a bit looser on my foot. They are snug everywhere most everywhere but the heel slips more than I would like.

Should I be sizing down? To a 8.5 in shell models (on a last 5) in this case? Or did i just find an shoe that was a bit off for my foot?

Cordovans can fit differently from calfskins in the same size. A family member who once accompanied me to the sadly departed Allen-Edmonds Cabazon outlet got a pair of MacNeils in shell cordovan. As I recall, he had to go down a full size to get a good fit. On reflection, I am not sure how much of it was the shell and how much the #7 last.

I find they fit wider- and a bit longer

They fit looser to me too, but not sure if it's enough to consider a size change. My comparison shoes are MacNeils in Cordovan and calf (7 last) and Fifth Streets in calf and Strand and Cambridges in Cordovan (5 last). I also have Kenwoods in both Cordovan and calf, but have not worn the calf yet.
