so, completely new to the denim world and, hence, never heard of most of the brands in this thread. it seems the best thing to do is to actually get someplace that carries as wide a cross-section as possible to try on different cuts, sizes, brands, etc?

In the San Francisco area, do i need to get myself to this Self Edge place to start? are there other retailers that would be a more optimal place to start?

Yeah, Self Edge is a great...actually the best place for a denim education.

yes, trying on is a must.

If you are in the bay area you have no excuse not to go to Self Edge. If you find something you like there, look no further.

If you don't like what you find there, you can try Rolo, the last time I was there they had APC, Jean Shop, LVC, and Cheap Monday. Barneys has APC, Naked and Famous and a bunch of other more trendy brands.
