I'm considering getting one of these. Sanders Holborn at left and C&J Holborn at right. (I think the side shot of the C&J boot has a leather sole, but that's the only side profile shot I could find)

I'm opting for a chukka because Clarks desert boots are too narrow for my feet. (Need a G fitting)

Which has a better design?

I never thought scotch grain leather would be appealing to me until I saw the Chepstow, which a friend bought last week. It really looks great. Don't know about the others, but I wouldn't be disappointed with the Chepstow.

How durable would the scotch grain be in rain and snow if I put Pecard on it?

I have the Chepstow's sister - the Brecon - in a darker brown scotch grain leather. It has held up well in rain so far.

The Chepstow will darken a little with the wet & salt, but that will only make it look better if you take good care of them, IMO. The scotch grain leather C&J uses is much thicker than their regular calf.

Do you have any pics of your Chepstows? 3/4 profile and an overhead? The one on Bodileys sucks.

Anyway, since I am bored and feeling helpful tonight, here are some photos from Google images.

Like I said, a rather handsome boot.

I really like scotch grain on chukkas and winter boots. Otherwise the styles are pretty much the same -- go with what fits you best.

Does anyone make a good quality chukka that has a toe that is in between the squareness of the Sanders Holborn and C&J Tetbury? This would be my ultimate chukka in brown suede.

^I'd take a look at Alfred Sargent and Rider Boot, both of which can do MTO if you don't find exactly what you like RTW.

Go for the C&J Brecon.

Why?

Great construction for a casual boot
Excellent sleek but not fashion-forward last (C&J 341)
Dark pebble grain is better for the rain as they won't look "stained" when wet
You can apply Pecard or whatever other waterproofings to the darker leather without worrying about discoloration
The Dainite soles are awesome
They're dark enough that you can push the boundaries and probably wear with casual suits in a pinch
