What was the conclusion on mattresses? How do memory foam compare to spring or hybrid spring? I'm thinking about trying one of the Zinus gel memory foam because they're so inexpensive it isn't much of a risk.

This is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people adore memory foam and some hate it. Same with latex, traditional springs or any of the number of hybrids available. You need to figure out what you like. Non of those choices are "better" then the other beyond what works best for you.

This is the best resource I've found online: https://www.themattressunderground.com/

I'd recommend you spend time reading that site before you spend a dime.

I like my leesa in terms of comfort and sleep, but I find it a bit warm.

I sleep hot, and even after switching to a lighter comforter, 73 is about the max temp I can stand. With a light blanket, I can feel the heat below me although feel fine.

The zinus is supposedly warmer, so that would turn me off.

But some people want more warmth, so...personal preference

iammatt turned me on to latex w/ wool batting and no springs about ten yrs ago, and we've really enjoyed the mattress. He liked it because he often overheats and finds them cool. It's definitely cooler than temperpedic but about the same as a regular mattress imo. Our kids will be transitioning from toddler beds to fulls soon, and we'll probably get latex for them too. They seem a lot more common, and cheaper, than they were back then.

I'd also stay away from the big national chains. They are notorious for their lack in transparency in what you are actually paying for. Which makes it nearly impossible to make an informed decision.

Well, I’m building some bookcases. Freestanding, white ash.

These have been a good bit of work. Just prepping material created 300 gallons of chips and sawdust.

Better.

The ash trees bell has been rung. The ring of dead trees is halfway up to me now and expected to close that remaining 75 miles in a few years.

It’s unfortunate, they’re going to go the way of the chestnut tree. Maybe there is a resistant strain out there.

A friend who lives in CO just built her countertops out of beetle killed pine. She filled in the larger holes with turquoise beads before sealing the whole thing with polyurethane. They look great.

I really like blue pine - almost went with some stuff, but without a local source, I didn't want the risk of getting too busy stuff.
