colors and layering

hey guys, if you wear like a sweater on top of a button up shirt do you want the shirt color to be darker or lighter than the sweater its underneath? if you don't know what im talking about, heres a pic:

Generally I prefer the shirt to be lighter, in large part because nearly all dark shirts are horrendous. That said the shirt can certainly be darker with white/cream/pastel sweaters.

i was going to say have the shirt lighter and the sweater darker.
it looks nicely matched. (let say a black sweater and a white shirt underneath for like a woman)

a darker shirt underneath a lighter sweater may work in some specific combos, but generally doesnt pull off correctly.
(even a less contrasting example like a dark grey shirt with a lite blue sweater , it just looks like you quickly threw something on without giving thought to matching)
