You do have to care about the weight. For example: light weight ties even with a windsor will be too small for a large frame person; heavy weight tie may look odd on smaller frame unless he wears FIH (but FIH will often make the tie too long for a small guy).

Tie width depends on your frame. In general, the larger the person, the wider the tie. None should go less than 3" for a classic look. I have small-medium frame, so I tie width is about 3 1/4. Safe area for average person is between 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 IMO.

On the topic of pairing, I think you'll find that the red pin-dot looks great on a contrast collar blue or blue striped shirt for a dressier look with a suit. I personally love pin dots.

I agree with this. Also, in my experience, a heavier tie makes a much nicer knot, and it's easier to get a nice knot. It seems like every time I wear my lighter ties I end up tying them a few times before I get the knot I want, but with my heavier ties I'm usually able to get it perfect the first time.

Don't buy them until you know what you can/will pair them with.

Thanks Srivats, but, in my eyes, this LE tie looks right out of the very tie collection I am discarding ("1993 geometric") http://i45.tinypic.com/6gafc7.jpg For now, I am rebuilding with solids, dots, repps, and knits. No patterns

Thanks. Agreed. For starters, I think I can pair anything with a white shirt and dark pants.

I can see that. For the record, I am going for a stylish/casual look (weekend ties) Not a corporate/professional/Gekko look.

I have a smaller frame, so a small knot is fine for me. But, 3.75" width might be pushing it.... b/c I am a 40R, and wear **** fit shirts, etc. (Correction: I just visually compared my 4" vs. 3.5", and the difference is trivial, in practice)

In that case the pindot is a little dressy but versatile. The others ill be good for this porpose. I always keep a pindot like the one you showed and my club's tie in my golf locker as they will go on any shirt. Also they are a way to add a little dress to an otherwise too casual outfit. After a game of golf I usually put on a pair of khakis with the hem rolled up, hiking socks, ugg slippers http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductD...02&model=Byron an ocbd, blazer and the pidot tie pulls it all together. Obviously this isn't sf approved, but it's really caught on with the younger <25 crowd at my cc. And, it's really comfortable.

This is why 90% of my shirts are plain/single colour.

Buy only a couple of the ties to start and see how that works out for you. Burgundy and the stripe. Maybe the plum.

Light blue shirt and dark or royal blue tie is fine. They should be many shades apart.

You sound like me. 6'0", 175 lbs, slim fit fan. I don't go over 3.5".

I like this combination for the pin dot crimson. It's a bit complex but there's the fun - it's a challenge. I see a good combination of color, pattern, and texture. I realize the tie here is more on the burgundy side rather than crimson, but you get the idea. Do something creative like finding a striped shirt with colors to draw out the tie. In this case, it was easy to find the shirt because it's a $500 Kiton. They usually have nice striped shirts.

Now look at what they have done with this tie:

I just don't like that. They're counting on the complementary color thing between red and blue. It's too strong. The colors of the tie and the shirt are too strong. If one were to attempt this, the blue would need to be tinted down substantially. Plus, we need some warm tones in the stripes somewhere to pick up the warmth of the tie.

Here is another combination I like. I took a shirt pattern off of the Modern Tailor website and combined your pin dot crimson tie with PhotoShop. I like the color combination because the blue of the shirt has been tinted down substantially. The stripes look nice with the semi-solid tie. I like the yellow (warm color) in the shirt to pull out the warmth of the tie.
