Christening gift ideas for my god-son....

Any suggestions?

I am godfather to my nephew, christening is in a couple of weeks....so I need some ideas for gifts for the little guy.

I'm not remotely Christian - Catholic school will do that to ya - so I feel like doing the expensive rosary beads and a St Whoever medallion would be a bit odd.

I'd like him to be able to keep it though....ideas?

Case of Whisky / Port from his birth year to be opened / presented when he comes of age (drinking or otherwise).

Whatever you give him, its not like he is going to be able to use / appreciate it now.

my god daughter will be christened in 3 weeks and though 'm a lapsed catholic, i'm doing the crucifix/cash combo.

I am godfather to quite a few. I have found that nothing lasts.

As impersonal as it is, I find money and a medal to be the best option. It is put into the childs
account and they can use it when they get older. I had considered starting a 529 college savings for the last one, but I think I just got lazy and just gave the check, I can't remember.

If they choose m@t to be godfather, they should be ok with it.

Another thing I see is that if you give it to the kid at their 18th or 21st B-days, its not going to be appreciated in the right way. At 18 I would have taken it to a party and swigged it out of the bottle to get wasted.

I would do a double gift, based on being in VN. there is a great shop with embrodered clothing not to far from the central market om HCM. get his a few sets of nice shirts and shorts, him mom will apprectiate that.

then, get him one of the nice antique watches that is available in town, get it engraved with something like "from your godfather on the occasion of your chrisining". give it to him at his wedding, or give it to his parents to give him at his wedding. (you can exchange college graduation for wedding, if you want.

ya, I was thinking about a watch actually. The ones in Saigon can't really be trusted, but ya, maybe buy something duty free on the way in and have it engraved, give it to his mother. Not much of a watch expert...and wouldn't wanna spend a small fortune on it, but ya, possible.

The other thing I was thinking of doing was starting a bank account for the kid. Putting a grand in now, and maybe 250 a year every year til his 18th b'day. With a heavily government subsidised university system back home, and factoring in almost two decades of interest, it would probably put him through college.

This was my point with the 529 account, I omited the yearly contribution but I thought that was understood with any godchild. I don't know where you are so whatever investment vehicle is applicable.

I always do watches at first communion.

Catholics are baptised at the christening.

On my last go I had to get a letter from the church saying I was in good standing, so I guess it varies from parish to parish.
