Chino Brand Recommendations (for my specific goal)

Hey everyone, I am new to these forums.

I am in my early 30s and in the midst of a wardrobe redo. My biggest goal is to minimize the amount that I wear jeans. With that, my goal is to find some good chinos to replace jeans. I am not a dressy person and probably never will be, nor do I go many places that require myself to be very dressy. I am mostly a t-shirt kind of guy, but want to start introducing more henleys and such.

My goal in regard to chinos is no creases, not formal looking, has some stretch for comfort, look great dressed down with tees and such, and slim or tapered look. My budget, if I had to pick one, would be up to $150. I looked at two very common options like Bonobos and J. Crew but they always look too formal in the pictures (not sure if that is truly how they look in person). I love the way the Taylor Stitch Slim Foundation Pant looks but there is no stretch. I like the basic colors like light or dark khaki, light or dark grey, olive.

Any recommendations would be great!

I wear Bonobos, they are pretty versatile dressed down or up. They are both fairly roomy and flattering, and I would say they lean towards casual, although I’m not sure what your criteria is for that.

The only issue with Bonobos is that their quality control is a shitshow. You cannot purchase the pair you tried on at one of their locations, you have to order them online at the counter. The pair you receive may or may not fit the same way. Deviations in fit are pretty unacceptable for a $100 pair of chinos. Luckily their exchange/return policy is excellent, so you can order several pairs, keep the one that fits, and return the rest for a full refund and no shipping charge. It’s a bit of a song and dance. I’ve read J Crew isn’t a whole lot better, but their returns policy isn’t as generous.

can you give some measurements, like what your waist size is, that way, i can maybe sort out what brands fit bigger or on the smaller side and could potentially be a good fit for you. also, am i correct that what you mean by the stretch, is that your looking for some spandex / elastane in the pants right? also, does it need to be mainly natural fibers, or can there be some polyester / synthetic materials? the front rise / inseam measurements are also important, so if you give a rough estimate for this, i can then possibly find some options, like for example, mid rise with 30" inseam.

I used to find that Banana Republic mason fit chinos fit me great and looked great. No creases, and a nice slightly tapered look that was still very classic. I think I purchased 4 pairs back in 2016 or so. Sadly they all wore out and I had to throw them out. I wore them a lot.

I purchased a new pair this year, and the quality was so poor compared to the ones I got in 2016 I was shocked. Would not recommend any of the current banana republic offerings.

Sadly I’m in a bit of the same boat as you. I just wouldn’t get Banana Republic, based on my most recent experience.
