Chesterfield versus Great Overcoat

Hi Gents,

I would like to get a heavy warm coat for the office. The Chesterfield seems like a more formal coat while the Greatcoat is a bit more casual/playful? And then then are simpler double breasted military type coats, too. I have pasted some examples from O'Connells below.

I would like to hear folks' views on the function of these different types of overcoats. If one would only have one for work, which makes the most sense? I live in NYC which gets cold, but not terrible.

I'm not an overcoat master but I don't like any of those choices, they seem to have an old man vibe, which could be due to the length. I think a slim-fitting peacoat would be better and more modern, but that's just me.

The Double Breasted example is actually a Navy Blue version of their British Warm.

I wore this type of coat in 32 oz Melton when I lived in Chicago.
I also still have have a gray (Invertere) greatcoat from that time.
It is heavy melton.

Both are very warm.

A pea coat is to be worn without a jacket underneath, and I don't think that would make any sense in his case....

If I could choose out of those 3 for 1 for a work environment I would pick the Chesterfield... But as GBR said, all are fine

You still haven't found a coat since last year?

Well, if I am to interject, check out Indochino. Right now they have their full line of overcoats, peacoats, trenchcoats, and toggle coats at reasonable prices $350-$400.

I've ordered a trenchcoat from them last year and it works great for the fall. For the winter you should go for an overcoat. Also, you do need to consider your measurements and give some tolerance for wearing your coat over a suit or sweater.
