I am looking for a good cashmere sweater for a present. I am not worried about the price but I want to know what everyone thinks who are the top contenders in the field. Check out www.cashmere.org. They think that they represent the best of the best.

If you were referring to the best cashmere fabrics or scarves, determining the best would not be hard. In fabrics, there would be contention between Loro Piana and Millionaire Cashmere. In scarves, shawls, stoles and blankets, Alex Begg takes the title. Once, however, you cross that line from flat goods into manufactured clothing, there is not so definite a "best".
Malo, Cashmere Cashmere, Tse, and Manrico, among others, are all worth checking out.

And, as an owner of both Malo and N Peal goods, I'd have no difficulty buying N Peal or Ballantyne at a retail price that's considerably less than Malo, Colombo or LP. The Scottish cashmere is marginally less soft than the Italian but it holds its shape better.

I guess one of the most expensive as in general you have what you pay for cashmeres.

What are the prices of these brands?

Mccormicculus:

Consider Lucien Pellat-Finet and Kiton cashmeres, both brands are over $2,000 at full retail price.

Avon Celli is my favorite brand of cashmere sweaters with Malo and Loro Piana running close 2nd and 3rd.

I very much doubt Lucien Pellat Finet makes cashmere rather than commissioning designs from (good) weavers.

Ballantyne retails from $550 and way, way up -- a standard sweater from there easily runs $700 and intarsia over $1000 -- that is probably the equal of the Malos and Cucinellis.

TSE cashmere doesn't strike me as being in the same league.

My N. Peal cashmere was a little quick to pill on me.

I still wear a cashmere sweater from Banana Republic I picked up seven years ago and it has yet to pill. $495 full retail. Go figure.

How does Marc Jacobs stack up in this range? I saw that pale blue sweater in GQ a couple months back and I want it, or one in that color anyway. However they appear to retail around $1000 or so. Given the recognizable name, I'm guessing it's probably not worth that much.

$495 for a Banana Republic cashmere sweater.?.? What kind is it.? The most expensive cashmere sweater I have ever seen them make was a heavier knit turtleneck that went for $300. They haven't made even that for the past few years.

Ernest: Both the Lucien Pallat-Finet and Kiton I have are the heavy ones (for Fall/Winter wear). Neither has 8-ply on its label. I assume they are both 8-ply consider the price they are charging. MB
