A professor makes enough to buy a McLaren Senna?
Not just a Senna, but also this rare beast:

Teaching is a hobby for him though, obviously not a source of meaningful income.

Could be a business, medical, or law professor with lucrative income outside of teaching.

I don't even think the highest paid professors with big outside consulting gigs really earn enough to play in that game other than the finance guys who leased their brains to funds that blew up. I know several with Porsches that they drive/race, but none who are buying million dollar supercars for display purposes...

This guy was a F500 CEO, is on a bunch of public company boards, and owns a number of businesses.

The double American flags on a VW Bug are a nice touch.

One of my parents friend’s teaches at the University of Houston as a side gig. His main job is his land surveying company he owns. His big passion are Lotus cars and I think he’s the president of the Houston Lotus car club.

some engineer professor does enough consulting gig that I can think of, but not sure how high it would push your salary up

I’m not a fan of what Guntherwerks does to the 993. The engineering, materials, performance, dynamics, etc. may be top notch, but they have managed to entirely ruin the platform’s light and airy good looks. The car appears way too swollen and bottom heavy now. Blegh.

I don't think being a professor as your main job with side consulting will provide enough to buy a McLaren Senna. Teaching would need to be a side gig like my parents' friend who owns a bunch of Lotuses.

the ones I met in Cornell were definitely "teaching is side gig", I would never want to be his grad student, I knew 3 guy in his group, they speak to their advisor about twice a year..., their phd was about as much "go figure it out, and if you can't publish fast enough to graduate you should get out"
