Can One Gold-Plate Black Sunglass Frames?

My black framed aviator sunglasses fit my face perfectly. Yet, I'd like to now gold-plate them (or at least gold paint). Is this possible, and if so where might one have this done?

Yup, a competent electro plater should be able to do this for you, people have phones plated quite a lot, should be straightforward enough to find someone to do it

I'm not sure its a profession but its something people do for a living certainly! Lots of trades, i.e. automotive restoration and customisation etc use specialist people to re chrome plate stuff and a lot of them do side work like phones, jewellery, general bling. Not my thing but useful if you like that kind of thing

I think you would be better off just getting a new pair of glasses, though I do realize that you may not find the same frames in a different finish. To gold plate the frames, the black needs to be stripped off, (which may be difficult,) and then you would need to plate them. The method of stripping the old finish will depend on whether the glasses are painted, anodized, or powder coated. There may some issues with thickness issues, as the new gold plate will likely be thinner than previous finish (if that is what the glasses previously had), and this could cause the lenses to no longer fit.

Please note that I am not a professional electro-plater or materials engineer, (I am a mechanical engineer), so I could easily be wrong, I am just trying to give you the best information I can.

Probably a more helpful answer than mine, I hadn't thought about having to strip the existing coating. I am not an engineer and I do not play one on the TV....

You would be better buying new ones - difficult to justify the cost and many finishes will always look what they are, gold overlaid on black.
