Okay, this is a newbie question but I looked through the archives and couldn't really find anything that fits the description of my question.

I was recently given two sports jackets (tweed and green cord) and everything fits pretty well except I'd like to possibly shorten them and tighten up the waist a little. I don't even have to shorten them but it would be nice to bring the sides closer to my frame.

So, can I get this done? How much will it cost me? I'm in a small town with a few alteration places.

 Thanks.

you can certainly have the waist taken in. the price depends entirely on the tailor, but i'd say $40-$60 max.

as for shortening, the jacket, you can do this too but many would say that this will throw off the balance of the jacket. in other words, this will change the distance between the bottom of the jacket and the pockets, and so on. someone else will be able to tell you just how much a jacket can be shortened.

i would avoid doing this unless it's way too long.

Be careful when you get the jacket altered not to tell the tailor to take it in too much, because it will end up having the shape of a woman's jacket, or one from the 70s.
