Can I wear hopsack and travel pants?

First post - new here! 59 and trying to figure out how to look stylish without looking like I'm trying to be 18!

I have a beautiful navy blue sport coat that is hopsack. The kind of blazer that goes with nearly everything. But I have really gotten into the Rhone commuter pants - it's kind of a spandex-nylon stretch blend but the fabric is thin. Great looking pants that fit great and are very comfortable. Can be casual or with a jacket business casual-ish.

Question: the hopsack coat is kinda heavy. Is that too much with the light and very thin Rhone pants or is it okay? I know you're supposed to match fabrics? Need some guidance here please!

Blazers made using the hopsack wave are usually very lightweight. You are saying that it's heavy. Are you sure you have a hopsack blazer?

Another more important question is what collar are the pants? Are they blue too?

Hopsack doesn't have to be light - one of the benefits of hopsack is that it can be quite heavy, but still airy. Many RTW hopsack blazers are light simply because the light, unstructured jackets have been fashionable for so long.

I'm not familiar with the trousers in question, but the description makes me doubtful. Thin, stretchy fabrics usually drape terribly, and thus do not really look like "proper" (in my reactionary, elitist interpretation of proper) letwear to go with a classic navy jacket.

Still, assuming the fabric doesn't look too artificial (it's hard to tell from pictures), and assuming you get a straight fit that doesn't look stretchy, you will probably look ok to most people.

If you don't mind some unsolicited advice, though, I would strongly suggest that the place to start for an older man trying to dress more stylish is to get some tailored trousers. Classic cut wool trousers are remarkably comfortable, especially if you're accustomed to wearing the tight, low cut chinos and jeans that most stores sell today. Assuming you get a size that fits you, you shouldn't need any stretch (and few men look good in tight, stretchy clothing). A pair of grey flannel trousers can be worn with your navy jacket, with a shirt and a knitted sweater, and with a (preferably long sleeved) polo. Oxford shirt, flannel trousers, some decent leather shoes, and a sweater will be a fairly timeless stylish look that doesn't look over-dressed.

Best of luck, it's never too late to start taking an interest in style!
