the bear would win most of the time, but not all the time
a moose's neck is very strong, and he can rip things to shreds with his tines, tear down small trees
plus, the hooves are sharp and deep and they know how to use them
and once down they use their heads (and 1500 lbs) to crush things

but if the bear gets on his back/neck, all over

Famous fighting monkey, Jacco Macacco.

Jacco Macacco was a fighting ape or monkey who was exhibited in monkey-baiting matches at the Westminster Pit in London in the early 1820s. He achieved some measure of fame among the sporting community through his reputed prodigious record of victories against dogs.

^In D. Brian Plummer's historical novel Nathan: A Pit-Fighting Dog Nathan, a bull-and-terrier, fights a Barbary ape clearly modeled after Jaco. In the fight, the monkey has a weapon kind of like an outsized "church key" with which he wreaks havoc on the poor dog. The end of the fight looks like it was taken from Jock of the Bushveldt where Jock kills a pet baboon that is a notorious dog killer.

Jaco's victories seem to have been over very small dogs. I have seen weights of 19 and 20 pounds reported for his adversaries. Jaco was indeed famous. He appears in a "Tom and Jerry" cartoon illustrating the adventures of Pierce Egan's heroes of that name. (Not to be confused with the Warner Brothers' cat and mouse!)

I know of one modern day fight pitting a pit bull vs. a monkey. The same man owned both animals. For an absolutely crazy reason (One of his cult followers had a dream that the monkey had killed them all!), he decided to put down the monkey. I don't know the species, but it must have been a fairly formidable monkey, perhaps a large Rhesus, because he had also brought along a bandog in case the pit bull wasn't up to the job. However, the pit bull made short work of the poor monkey. At least such was the story I heard. The guy who did this has been dead for quite a few years.

I think Jacco was very small - 15 lbs or so. Certainly no Generla Aldo.

Apparently Jacco was very vicious toward humans as well. When I was young, monkeys were still fairly popular as pets although they certainly seem to have gone out of fashion. Some of them must have been satisfactory. Otherwise I can't imagine the practice of keeping them would have endured for so long.

There's an illustration in one of the Fleig books of a guy fighting a bulldog in a match. I believe it was a flyer advertising the event. Do you have any info on man vs. bulldogs?

On 6 July 1874 the Daily Telegraph published an article, written by James Greenwood, in which he reported on 25 June 1874 to have witnessed a fight between a man and a dog. Greenwood recounted the tale in his 1876 book, Low-Life Deeps, in the chapter called In the Potteries.
The fighter, named 'Brummy', was a middle-aged dwarf about 4.5 feet (1.4 m) tall, with oversized features, and bowed legs. He had apparently agreed to fight the dog for a bet, on his theory that no dog "could lick a man". His "opponent" was a white bulldog named Physic. Held by its guardian, the dog apparently did not bark, but was excited to the point where tears ran from its eyes. The fight, watched by an audience of about 50, occurred at an old inn at Hanley, Staffordshire, in a large guest room, its windows closed and its floor covered in sawdust, with the ring cordoned off by a line.
During the fight Brummy was bitten deeply several times on his arms, and the Bulldog was dealt several heavy blows to the head and ribs. After ten rounds the Bulldog's head was heavily swollen, it had lost two teeth, and one of its eyes was closed. The fight lasted until round eleven when Brummy knocked the dog out.
This story was reported on by the New York Times, which stated that the story is probably false, though noting that the Daily Telegraph insisted on its veracity

My understanding is that in most of these contests the men kept back and punched the dog when it was the end of its tether while they kept out of reach so that the dog couldn't bite them. I should think it would be extremely hard to get a good modern fighting dog to attack a human. Cyrus and I lately have taken to visiting a pit bull belonging to some neighbors who keep her confined in her kennel run. We have lovefests with all three of us kissing each other. She is an extremely sweet dog although very dog aggressive--she and Cyrus are old friends.

"The Milk of Human Kindness" was a pretty legit album, can't say I really care one way or the other about Grizzly Bear's music (although Beyonce and Jay-Z were spotted at a GB concert) so I'd have to give edge to Caribou.
