Of course you can explain in a more detailed manner how M&As generate cost savings or new revenue opportunities (I usually refer to economies of scale or scope in this context) but it's still useful to have an all-encompassing term that highlights the 'synergistic' (for lack of a better word) aspect of combining certain things that result in a 1+1 =3 situation. None of the more explanatory terms achieve this imo.

As someone who writes a lot in public relations, Synergize drives me into a frenzy. Nothing annoys me more than someone who turns a noun into a verb, especially a noun that is vague to start with, just what is syngergy? It's a plastic management word from the 1980s.

Also,"thinking outside the box" should be part of the banned phrases in regular international business language.

I've never heard it as a verb. Makes no sense. I agree.

That said, synergy has a very specific meaning in the corporate diversification literature.
