Before Phil Knight started Nike he wrote an SA with the title '' Can Japanese sports shoe companies do to German sport shoe companies what Japanese camera companies did to German camera companies ''
We all now know the answer , it was yes it terms of the lower manufacturing costs but it wasn't a Japaneses company that would reap the benefits it was Phil Knight and Nike .
So the a similar question applies today. Can Chinese clothing companies do to Italian clothing companies what Italian companies did to English clothing companies ?
Once again it would appear that the answer is yes , but some of the Italian companies are wise enough to move their manufacturing to China and use the savings in manufacturing to spend on marketing .Instead of making goods in countries with higher labour costs .The English companies just tried to carry on competing with the Italians and they all suffered a slow death .
The quality of the clothing that is made in China is improving all the time . I have coats from Arc'teryx and Nobis that are made in China and there is never a loose stitch or a crooked stitch . A friend of mine sells suits that are made by a company called Munro and there production levels improve every year .
So sadly just as the former Chester Barrie factory which then became Lutwyche has go bust .I fear that Oxxford will suffer the same fate .
Then problem the Italians will have is how you sell a Brioni suit for $5000 if it doesn't say made in Italy on the label ?
