Am I right in thinking that detachables made the ultimate sacrifice in WWII? People seem to wear them in photos all throughout the thirties.

It seems to have been around that time, except for barrister's shirts, and the occasional marcella shirt - but these have wing collars.

Supposedly, men rediscovered the comfort of a soft attached collar while wearing their uniform shirts during the war(s), and the detachable collar died penniless and alone.

Sadly, the vast majority of barristers, even senior ones, have taken to wearing a false shirt front under their Bar jacket, with attached wings and bands. It's kinda depressing. I'm thinking of having some shirts with detachable (soft) collars made for me, so I can replace them with wings when going into court...

Yes, my nextdoor neighbour, a QC, sports one of these. I suspect his bowties are clip-ons, also.

A criminal Silk, perchance? I understand bow ties are all the rage...

I'm not really sure where to have detachable collared shirts done - one of the owners at Herringbone said that they could, but they're not my very favourite shirts, so the price would have to be reasonable...

Have you had any shirts made in Sydney or Melbourne?

Re the shirts: You can order them from Ede & Ravenscroft in London. I can't imagine there are too many makers left in Oz.

Charles Edward, in Melbourne, made some of the detached collar shirts for me many years ago - poor guy, it caused him a few problems but he delivered the goods. I have had shirts made by some of Melbourne and Sydney's best - pm me if you want an unabashed commentry.
