Best Band/Group/Artist Ever?

Who is the best band or artist ever? I want to keep this discussion to modern music rather than classical. Any genre - electronic, jazz, rock, pop, indie, country, hip-hop, etc.

I know it's nearly impossible to do this, and nobody is right or wrong. Just put who you think is the best and for what reason.

I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm pretty sure it'll be Foreigner, Richard Marx, Styx, or Boston.

The correct answer is The Jam

Paul Weller is easily one of the best songwriters of the modern era, showing his versatility going from pop-influenced punk to straight-ahead pop to ballads to soul. He's influenced a countless amount of bands, musically and sartorially. He took the music already made by The Beatles, Kinks, etc and gave it balls with The Jam's discography.

Brian - I agree with all your choices. Zeppelin is often stated as the best band ever, which I think may be true.

My personal favorite is Flogging Molly. Three great albums, each with more emotional depth than most bands will ever manage. That said, I'm not ready to enshrine them yet. It just seems too soon. (It must be said, too, that they owe a lot to the Pogues, though I like FM much more than the Pogues.)

For the purpose of this discussion, I have to nominate the Clash. And I'll suggest Television on the strength of "Marquee Moon" alone, though the rest of their stuff pales a bit.

Flogging Molly is very enjoyable and has a hell of a lot of soul, but they're not really very diverse at all. I like them a lot, but I wouldn't consider them for best band ever. And **** The Clash. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros forever.
