Admittedly I've not followed men's fashion trends very closely, but I know that for many years now many male actors, models, and general men-about-town have chosen to maintain several days' growth of beard in the apparent belief that it looks attractive. We're not talking about well-maintained and trimmed beards; this is the scuzzy, unshaven look that suggests that the guy can't afford a razor or has been too lazy for shave for a week or so. Will someone please explain to me (1) how this stupid trend got started; (2) why it has continued for so long; (3) why women (or at least some of them) seem to like this look; and (4) why these scuzzy-looking dudes prefer this approach to being either clean-shaven or maintaining an attractive beard. I've yet to find a logical explanation.

A fact already acknowledged in my posting. Any women out there care to tell us WHY they like it?

Probably something evolutionary about virility.

Or an evolutionary response to people like OP who attach some sort of serious significance to what is in fact, merely adornment.

It's a trend. Most people don't give a **** - neither should you. Are you also horrified by young women going out into the world in sweat-pants?

Take a step back. There are global trends, such as those portrayed in magazines. There are regional trends, such as those found on styleforum or your local town. And anything in between. Fashion people are always looking for subject matter to write about. I just read an article about how "Adam Levine" and others stopped sporting the stubble look and how it's all about being clean shaven now. The next day I see Adam Levine live on "The Voice" with stubble.

I have been clean shaven my entire life (I'm nearly middle aged now). Just recently I decided to grow out a beard/moustache. It's only 1/4" long, my girlfriend loves the look on me. SHE thinks I look sexy. I like that she thinks I look sexy. It makes for more sexy time.

I've dated woman who dislike facial hair. No two woman are the same.

It's really not a big deal, do what you like.
