Following on from the 'Well dressed movies' thread ...
I don't claim to be an avid Sherlock Holmes buff but I recently saw a made for TV film version of 'Hound of the Baskervilles' with Richard Roxburgh as Holmes (I recognised him as the villain's sedekick in Mission Impossible 2). To my untrained eye he seemed to be pretty much spot on as I imagine a well dressed Victorian gentleman would be turned out, whether it be city suits, country tweeds, dining in white tie and tails or lounging at 221-B in a silk dressing gown.
By chance within hours I watched the cacophonous clattering mess that is the more recent Robert Downey Junior version of Sherlock Holmes, where he is portrayed as a sort of proto hipster with something like a pea coat, fedora, sunglasses and facial stubble.
I realise that after so many people have played the part RDJ had to do something to take ownership, and I read somewhere that he balked at wearing a deerstalker, but his appearance just seems one of a whole host of jarring aspects of that film. The sequel will be out in a couple of weeks and I don't expect much of an improvement clothes wise, and I hope Richie will tone down the visual and aural assault, but I doubt it will happen that way.
Anyone else see Roxburgh's version and notice his threads?
