Where can one (legally) acquire music at higher bit rates? If i'm not mistaken, cd's come at 128...where can one get 192 or even 320? I know it doesn't make much of a difference, but I'm really just curious.

Amazon's MP3s are encoded at higher rates, and iTunes+ from Apple are also encoded at higher rates. Both are also effectively DRM-free, so you can play them on any number of players.

Chesky just opened their hi-res store distributing stuff from a bunch of small labels: http://www.hdtracks.com

They have everything from high-rate MP3s to 96/24 PCM.

AIX has high-res PCM: http://www.itrax.com

Music Giants has quite a collection that's more mainstream: http://www.musicgiants.com

Magnatune also has good quality downloads and seems to be more of an indie producer: http://www.magnatune.com

Two words: Apple Lossless

Its identical to a CD, but takes up less space. Can't get any better than that (assuming you're ripping from a CD). It also helps to have a big external hard drive and the largest iPod available.
