Picked up a pair of EGs over the weekend that I suspect could be Russian Reindeer. I'd appreciate opinions from those with more knowledge on the subject than I possess. Here are some pics.

My guess it is stag leather (grain side), what he Italians call: "Cervo". The leather is very soft and has these natural texture (in the tannery, they might even bring the grain out more by tumbling the hide). Stag leather can also be worked flesh side-out, then it is a suede with a quite deep nap.

The numbering in the 11-thousands lets me place the shoes at around 1987. I've never tried it, but I believe EG is quite forthcoming with the information if you give them the production number,

Every example of Russian calf that I've seen has a much more pronounced grain.

For example

Thank you, Bengal, for both the information and the suggestion. I have contacted EG via email and will let you know when I receive a response.

Here's an nice example of what EG used to call stag suede:

And yes, they're usually pretty good at dispensing info. If you email the Jermyn Street store, it will take a while fo your request to work its way to the factory, but they will get back to you.

Can't see the pics but russian leather has a unique odor, almost like a wood-burning stove or a charcoal grill. It is fairly strong and doesn't really dissipate over time.

Not only does Edward Green respond to inquiries concerning specific shoes, they do so in a very timely manner.

From Helen of their staff:

I have received your email via our London shop and confirm ticket number 11566 refers to a line of Chelsea in TOBACCO STAGSKIN (PLEASE NOTE STAGSKIN IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE)on the 202 last "E" width with N1 soles (single leather weight). These were produced for Old England in April 1993.

Spot on on your call on the leather Bengal!

Does flesh-side out stag leather = buckskin?
