Are the larger size watches simply a fad?

I do wonder: do people wear their leather strapped watches loose at the wrist, which allows for movement, or tight to the wrist?

That picture of the Lange above shows the person wearing it like a watch with a metal bracelet.

These pictures are exactly what I am inquiring about. Maybe it is just me but, although the watches look good, my thoughts are they are huge compared to his wrist size. When looking at the pictures, notice how the lugs of the watch extend out to nearly the total width of the wrist. Again, no offense intended but I think they are much too big to wear with a suit.

I have two watches on straps - a '60s Heuer Carrera and a recent (final iteration) Omega Dynamic Date.

I prefer to have them both a little loose, but not as loose as a bracelet.
As an example, I like the strap to be tight enough so that the watch does not move along my arm if I lift my arm up, but I like it to be a little loose so that the watch can move slightly from side to side if I shake my arm.

Interestingly, the Carrera moves a little more on my wrist than does the Dynamic, as the Carrera's strap is quite thin. The Dynamic has quite a thick strap (still using the OEM Omega strap in brown, sueded leather, now dark and burnished with age and use) and so it is much stiffer and moves less.

I like the look of bracelets on watches, but I've never liked the feel of them - they move too much for my liking, and pretty much all the ones that I've tried on (including the bracelet that came with my Omega Dynamic) pulled hairs out of my wrist. I'm happy to wear a watch, but I didn't want to end up with a funny, bald patch on my wrist.

I have a large watch, maybe 45 or more mm, that is about 70 years old. the Portuguese also started about that long ago, I believe. not a fad, but a cycle thing.

An egregious use of the word.

I don't really understand some of the vitriol for the small watch people. If you don't like large watches then just don't buy them.

It looks very much like a stiff, unworn-in strap. Maybe just testing it in a shop?

/M, from 21 to 47 millimetres...

The Subs/Seadwellers, about 40mm, are about the largest I can go. I've tried on Luminors, 44mm, which I love aesthetically, but they look like a VW on my wrist.

As for why some here on SF have a contempt towards big watches, I think it's because too many amjacks sport them. That's my observation anyway. But hard to argue with the look if the watch is proportional (and tasteful) and you avoid the AJ uniform.

I need a big watch or it feels and I think looks too small against my fairly large body.
