Thoughts on Glenlivet, generally speaking? I saw both the 15 and 18 objectively well priced (relative to general MSRP in my area, if not necessarily value for quality) at a local market and am at least half tempted to explore.

I want to say once upon a way back I had their standard 12 and was not remotely impressed...
The 18 is one of my favorites, I tend to be sentimental about the 12 as it was my first.

Crazy how oxidation/neck pours can affect a bottle. I had a bottle of Bunnahabhain that was TERRIBLE for the first few pours. I came back after a month or two, and it's a totally different animal.

I think its become cool to **** on Glenlivet to prove one's aficianado chops, but I can't say I've ever had a pour of Glenlivet that I haven't enjoyed, and for the price, that says something

Curious, does this extend to the newer (I have no idea how recent, so please someone educate me) 40% bottlings for y'all?

Not that going from 43% (I believe that was the previous norm for both) is THAT dramatic, but it does lessen the punch, generally speaking.

I know confidently I don't care for the 12.

Idk. When I tried the Glenlivets, it was never my favorite. I just don't particularly enjoy them.

For the price, the 12 year old is a good value. That said, I tend to go for the Signatory bottlings and older varieties, but again, at its price, the entry level Glenlivet is pretty hard to beat

Yeah, I believe it was 2020/21 or so. Believe it or not, I’ve got a bottle from 05. I have an unopened newer bottle, that apparently everyone says is terrible. I haven’t had the chance to compare them yet; I keep my 43% 18 in my cold dark basement. I have been nursing it because I like it so much, it’s a matter of time I suppose before the inevitable.

Bad influences, the lot of ya.

@stephenaf2003 ya, thissssss (the 40%) doesn’t do much for me. It’s not dreadful, by any means. Perfectly enjoyable, but many far superior options at same/lesser cost. This would probably be a top option to push upon guests who want whisky but don't really dig whisky.

Maybe I’ll fawk around and try the 18 one of these days...

I generally enjoy Glenlivet but have to admit, I haven't bought a bottle in years.
For me though, I draw the line at 43%. Below that and the taste is too watered down IMO. Too many good entry level options at 43/46/48% for me to bother with 40%.
A couple recent drams I've enjoyed (the Glen Garioch 12 is 48% and was a ridiculous value).

I don't think I've ever even come across a Glen Garioch before.
Thank you for your service. This was a really, really fine whisky, and given there were under 700 bottles total, I won’t come across this one again. Easily one of my top 3 distilleries, hands down..

Edradour is I think at the very top of my list for surprise finds. I bought their standard 10 as a complete throwaway (it roughly rounded out the dollar amount I was trying not to overshoot), and it is just gorgeous.

As an aside, not (technically) the place, but please drop any go to Japanese whiskey recs on me. Buddy is honeymooning to the land of the rising sun, and asking for recs...and I know very little about the Japanese juice. My experiences have been between meh (reasonably priced) and amazing (albeit insanely priced), with virtually no in between.
