Alter (shorten) ties?

Hey guys, :)

I've always had an issue with ties; they all seem to be too long when tying a usual four in hand knot. I've been recommended to use thicker knots (e.g. a double four in hand), although that isn't a preferable solution, as I prefer smaller knots.

I asked my tailor if he shortened ties, which he said he did. Do you guys know if it's something easy to do and if it leaves any kind of visible traces on the tie? Also, does it matter if the tie is lined/untipped or not?
