I picked these up on eBay. Insides have "Joplin". Never heard that style.

Adds a lot of support when you're walking or standing in them for an extended period.

My combat boots have a steel shank. I miss the mountain hikes I took in them....

I've often heard this, but never really noticed any difference having owned boots and shoes with and without over the years. Perhaps it makes a bigger difference to those who need more arch support than me. Climbing or riding places more demand on the arches, so the benefit makes a much bigger difference for those applications.

I found these vintage Leather Classics shoes at a discount store a few years back and they have more than served out their life. The cheap corrected grain leather started cracking early on. I stopped wearing these after replacing them with brown McGregors. So I was throwing them in the garbage tonight and thought I'd have a little fun with a box cutter first. Goes to show that "made in U.S.A." and "goodyear welted" hardly guarantees you are getting a good shoe. I have also firmly decided never to buy a cheap dress shoe again.

You can see that everything but the upper is synthetic.

Now I can better appreciate the quality that Allen Edmonds and other manufacterers represent.
