Let's say you had an interview, and could wear any shoe except a black PA or FA (or Hopkinson). For the suit, assume the standard navy or gray.
What would you choose?

I'm going to keep going here. I know that we believe that shoes make the man, but most folks just stick to conventional style folklore. So long as you're not too far off of that, you should be fine.

My advice - wear whatever gives you the most confidence. Confidence is key when interviewing.

@smfdoc and others in that occupation: I have a question for you guys. I have been invited to a "happy hour party" that takes place at the close of a medical conference. How do doctors dress for happy hour parties?
IANAD, but I've been to many such "events" with people in the medical profession (doctors and otherwise). Can be all over the place. As it's the end of a conference, I'd suggest "cocktail attire". I personally wouldn't suit up (I'm a dirty West Coaster), but a jacket, pocket square, with an "emergency tie" in the chest pocket in case it looks to be more formal than anticipated.

Black Exchange Place, but I suspect from your exclusions that you don't want a cap toe balmoral. The problem is a cap toe balmoral is the most formal business shoe and an interview that you're going to wear a suit for is about as formal as it gets in the business world.

So without the exclusions I'd go with my black Hops first, followed by my merlot Hops. My next choice from what I already own would be a black Carlyle, but a black PA or Exchange Place would be a better choice. Next in line would be one of the black cap toe brogues, the Cornwallis, or perhaps the Washington Square. Venturing into the less formal there's the Leeds or MacNeil followed by one of the loafers.

Black is the most formal color, followed by burgundy, followed by everything else.

I was raised where the use of "cocktail attire" meant dark suit with tie for men. Business Formal being a little more free with the suit color (I mean some less dark blues not strange colors or linen blend things). What you just described seems like "dressy casual" though I'm not sure what pants you'd be wearing. Seems like nowadays people have knocked each of these "tiers of formality" down a peg. That would explain gym shorts and t-shirts at Sunday services....

Olive Strandmoks for me to give some training to some of our sales folks this morning...

I did some more yardwork and then swapped into my Truman horsehide derbys for the afternoon...

Considering I have no clue what you're interviewing for, sure. Go for it. The worse case scenario, you don't get a job that you don't currently have.

Joking aside, That's pretty much toward the bottom on my personal hierarchy of interview shoes. I would personally do something darker, black being the most formal.

Again, I think it greatly depends on the position interviewed for and the company culture. Both of those are higher importance than style conformity.

Also from the trunk show - Leeds in green. I went with dark brown edge as I was going for understated and I find the green is unusual enough without calling more attention to it. The darker color is also not flashy, more like a british racing green, and looks good in various light. In case anyone is interested, the green Midland belt is a perfect color match.

In addition to these and the navy MacNeils I posted yesterday, my other weasel grab were natty strands, which look like all the other ones posted recently.

Maiden voyage natty strands!

Once you go cordovan, you'll never buy calf again!

There's a lot of truth to that statement.

I remember people saying that on here a couple years ago, and I kinda just laughed.

Then I got my paws on some walnut shell Daltons (that I had to resell due to sizing issues) and some Rancourt shell loafers and have been hooked ever since.

Beautiful Strands, by the way.

I was rather hoping that it will be less formal than the proper cocktail attire and closer to dressy casual. But they promise swing music and dancing, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯... maybe I should move to West Coast.
