Hi, I've been a long time lurker, just joining today. I usually buy sneakers in a size 10D, and would consider that my true size. have a pair of shell PTB's in a 9.5D and they are a little roomy to me,especially at the heel. I'm interested in some 984's and was wondering if I should try a 9.5 or go to a 9 since they don't have laces to tighten them up. I heard the Van last was a bit roomy. There are no dealers around me so I was thinking of ordering from Alden of SF.

Thanks for the help.

I'm new too, so perhaps you should take my response with a grain of salt. I have both the shoes in question, both shell, both exceedingly broken in, both BB. The PTBs are in my true size of 10E. The 986s are 10D, and if the damn things would ever wear out I would try a 10E (which I think would require the lined Alden version). In other words, for me they run rather true to size, but you will be stepping out of the heel of the 986s for awhile until the soles become flexible. You can always take a guess and return them if you need to. You'll have them a long, long time.

For most people, the Van and Barrie last run half a size big.
