Is a black suit okay?

Was thinking about a white square and a multicolored tie that is predominantly black...

You can get married in a black tux in the afternoon and in the evening switch to a white dinner jacket. You don't have to change your pants.

Black suit strikes me as a little too somber for a wedding. I’d go with something else if that’s an option.

If you're just attending don't bother, white shirt, navy suit and dark tie is your go-to outfit, no need to overdress and compete with groomsmen or the groom

Sure a black suit will do, especially if the majority of the celebration is in the evening. But so will a darker shade of blue, grey or brown, just be careful not to be too flashy and steal the spotlight from the happy couple.
Depending on where you are in the world, some might find black to be less festive (especially in the US), but if you have a black suit that fits you well and makes you feel like a million bucks, go for it!

If you own a black suit that is not evening wear (i.e. without grosgrain lapels and trouser stripes), congratulations as you will be one of the few men properly dressed at a funeral. As there is no other practical use for a black suit, very few men actually own one and thus end up wearing a make-do navy suit when the grim reaper calls. Which is actually what you should wear to a wedding.
