Not quite sure how @Caustic Man thinks your lapels qualify for "fad"-ishly wide

I see what you are getting at, but simply requesting to have the tie made shorter isn't the right solution.

It’s a Manton thing. He advocated for wider lapels at a time when the fashionable lapel was skinny. He correctly noted that most people’s bodies are far too large for the tiny lapels of the day. I think people exaggerated his ideas and the fad on SF was wider lapels regardless of body type. Lapels, like everything else, look best when proportional to your specific size and shape.

As for your tie length comment it is the answer for me because for me I like the standard FIH shape. I don’t need it cut a different way I just need it the proper length, which is shorter than 59 in. for my height and size. My answer to the problem isn’t universal just as your isn’t. There are a lot of suggestions to fix the problem in different ways.

I’m going to start advocating for the Golden Ratio to be used in lapel width determination. The width of the lapel should be 1.62 times the distance from the end the lapel to the shoulder. Alternatively, if you want a narrow lapel, the distance from the shoulder should be 1.62 times the lapel width.

I don't know, looks pretty good with a navy suit. My problem is that most of my ties are blue so I'm searching for something that is maybe green or orange. Nothing too loud, but something that pops a little more than a regular blue tie.

Yeah-- a bright green suit would be much more discreet.

I think the green tie with navy suit looks just fine, but people have very different reactions to color. ETA: The green is substantially brighter than the rest of the pieces in Murl's photo, which does make the tie stand out. But the tie is nice so it seems to me like it's OK if it stands out. I also suspect that the camera is boosting the saturation of the tie, which is probably a bit more sedate in person.

Here's some Hober plum linen.

I used to feel the same way, and in general, I prefer brown ties with blue shirts or blue stripes shirts, but brown ties and white shirts absolutely work. It just has to be the right brown.

It has been a busy week and so it has taken me this long to write down my thoughts on this fit, but I love it and it is exactly the kind of idea I was looking for. It is not just the tie, but the lighter jacket and its texture that contrast against the tie's delicately patterned smoothness. Understated, coherent, interesting and tasteful. Is the shirt slightly off-white or is it the light?

If you have any more ideas like these I am all ears.

Thanks! The shirt is just very grimy. It used to be white, but the air pollution and poor hygiene have colored it a sort of ash. It is about due for its yearly wash, so thanks for the reminder.

I did wear a Hober today.
