I am truly excited to present a rare and exquisite suit from what is perhaps the most sophisticated tailoring house in the world - A. Caraceni of Milan. This atelier was founded in 1949 by Augusto Caraceni, brother of the great Domenico Caraceni, who is considered the father of the Italian soft suit. Augusto had previously opened and operated the Paris branch of the original Caraceni - considered the city's premier tailor in the 30's, but was forced to close during World War II. In Milan, the tradition was carried on by Mario Caraceni, son of Augusto and nephew of Domenico until 1998. Mario still visits on a regular basis. A. Caraceni is currently run by Augusto's head cutter and son-in law Carlo Andreacchio, and grandson Massimiliano Andreacchio Caraceni, who is also a master tailor. Among the houses continuing the Caraceni name and tradition, A. Caraceni is the clear choice of the cogniscenti. The client list includes Luciano Barbera, Sergio Loro Piana, Calvin Klein and the late Gianni Agnelli. Suits require 3 fittings in Milan and start at appx. $6700. Annual production is only 700 pieces!

Size - this is a bespoke suit so it is not marked with a size. It measures like a trim US 42 (please check measurements)

Cut - instantly recognizeable! A. Caraceni suits have a totally unique and extreme elegant shape to the shoulder and upper sleeve. If you have ever seen a picture of Luciano Barbera then you know what I mean. True Barchetta pocket. The lapels are designed as a '3 roll 2 1/2' and have quite literally the best roll I have ever seen!

Construction - Hand cut and hand stitched. Canvas front. The facings were applied by hand, the shoulder seam is handsewn, and the sleeves are hand-set. Cugno Martello dart under the lapel. Handpicked lapels and pockets. Beautifully handpicked center back, side, and outer sleeve straight seams Handsewn buttonholes in the Roman style. Handsewn boutionerre loop. All corners are blunted (rounded) by hand which is a very rare detail. Handsewn Mezzaluna tacks on the pocket corners. Handsewn working buttonholes on the sleeves. The trousers have a handsewn waistband, handpicked fly and pockets, handsewn bar tacks, handsewn buttons and buttonholes, and special corozo buttons. I have never seen a suit finished more finely than this one.

Condition - previously worn, but only a handful of times from the looks of it! It is in perfect condition with no flaws. It is also of recent make - originally commissioned in 2005 by a famous real estate developer/art collector.

Fabric - not marked but it is likely pure superfine wool, though it could have some cashmere in it. I've seen thousands of premium grey worsted suit fabric in my time, but never one I liked more than this! The weight is between light and medium, with a hand that is somehow both luxurious and truly substantial. This is the perfect all-season weight. Up close it is reminiscent of a sharkskin, while from a distance it is the perfect shade of medium grey. This fabric is as inspiring as a grey worsted gets.

The Ralph Lauren Purple Label Collection is one of the most elegant, unique, and finely made menswear lines in the world today. This is a collection with its’ roots in Savile Row and 30’s elegance but with a flavor that is distinctly Ralph Lauren.

The Purple Label tailored clothing collection was made (in Italy) by the Saint Andrews Spa. - one of the finest tailoring firms in the world. These are truly world-class garments. Each jacket is individually cut by hand, the facings are basted by hand, the collars are completely handsewn, the sleeves are attached by hand, the buttonholes are handsewn - twenty hours of tailoring goes into each jacket!

For auction - an amazing pure cashmere suit tailored in Italy by Saint Andrew's for Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

Retail - Original retail was appx. $4795.00 plus tax.

Cut - single breasted three button.

Size - it is marked a US size 42 and measures to a trim US 42.

Condition - brand new with tags and perfect!! The buttons and thread needed to finish the sleeves are included.

Construction details - The jacket has a canvas front construction. This means that the front of the jacket gets it shape from a sewn in canvas interlining. This is far superior (and much more labor intensive and expensive) to the fused method used in lesser quality jackets. The front of this jacket will never bubble. The canvas front allows for a more tailored fit in the chest and a graceful "roll" to the lapel. If you examine the backside of the buttonholes you will notice that the stitching is slightly irregular. This is because the buttonholes were stitched by hand. The lapel buttonhole is functional. The lapels and pockets are handpicked - one of the most beautiful features of a high end jacket. The inside pockets are faced with the shell fabric.

The fabric:

Content - pure cashmere

Weight - on the heavier side of a medium weight.

Color(s) - black, grey, purple. The pictures do not do it justice.

Both pieces can be worn as seperates - its like getting a sportcoat and trousers for free with your suit!

Jacket measurements:

Shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back at the widest point - 19.25

Chest - 45.5

Waist - 41.5

Length from bottom of collar to bottom of coat - 30.5

Sleeves - 25

Maximum sleeve length - 26.25

Additional jacket detailing - double vented, fully lined, ticket pocket

Trouser measurements:

Condition - previously worn, but not much. The gentleman who commissioned this suit has a very large wardrobe so his suits are not worn frequently. It is still in really excellent condition. I found a couple of small areas that look like they could be spots/marks - what look like small lines under the lapel buttonhole and on the left shoulder, and some light spots on the outside of the left sleeve. All pictured. This fabric has a lot of natural variation though, so they could just be that way from the mill. Either way they are not an issue in my opinion - linen suits were never meant to look perfect.

Cut - single breasted, two button, double vented, patch pockets. The shoulder is fairly soft, with padding/wadding only at the end. Medium weight chest canvas.

Construction details - Hand cut and hand stitched. Hand padded lapels. Canvas front (no glue or fusing.) Handpicked lapels and pockets. Handsewn buttonholes. Handsewn boutonierre loop. Real shell buttons.

Special details - the lining is a special irridescent gold/blue paisley. The jacket is lined under the collar with the shell fabric so the lapels and collar can be turned up. There are real functioning buttonholes on the sleeves, with the left sleeve buttonholes done in contrasting thread.

Fabric content - real Irish linen from Holland & Sherry.

Fabric weight/finish - on the heavier side for a linen

Fabric color(s)/pattern - a beautiful golden tobacco brown. Stunning!! This was really difficult fabric to photograph - the last picture is probably the most accurate for color. There are no funny tints in person.
