I saw H&W in the theater and it was pretty good.

Basically, for me the great Allen films are AH, Manhattan, Hannah, C&M ... and I guess that's it.

I have liked several others but not been crazy about them. I enjoy the slapsticky early ones but don't go out of my way to see them. I will maybe Netflix some of the more recent ones.

'Deconstructing Harry' has some classic Allen moments where he is really bitter -- I think it was made around the time of his divorce from Mia Farrow.

Match Point is worth seeing.

Most others are worth a try if you like his stuff.

DH was made right after the Soon Yi scandal broke, and tries to at least explain how screwed up he is. I think "Bullets Over Broadway" was the first film to use a surrogate for him (John Cusack) after the backlash. "Manhattan Murder Mystery" is entertaining, and is mostly his longtime friends rallying around him after the divorce.

I love Kenneth Brannah's Woody Allen impersonation in that film.

Saw this last night. All through the movie I kept turning to my son and saying that I wanted to punch Michael Keene's character right in the throat. I don't anymore. Now I want to punch this reviewer right in the throat.

The movie was funny and charming. Was it as deep and insightful as Sophie's Choice? No, but it doesn't try to be. It has a message about cherishing the moment and living in the present. The devices are trite and overdone and they work here. The historical characters are one dimensional and done in caracature and that also works because it adds comedy and really, it isn't a movie about Picasso or Hemingway. There is a scene with Salvador Dali that nearly had me in tears.

This guy pretty clearly has a bug up his ass about Woody Allen films, and that's fine. Not everyone has to like everything, but I don't think you know anything important about the film after you've read his review than you did before you read it except that he dislikes Woody Allen films.

Give the film a solid B+ (would see again). Give the review a weak D.

Midnight in Paris was thoroughly enjoyable. That reviewer must have a real stick up his ass to write what he did. I think some people get riled up over Woody's films because they look at his great films and wonder if he would have produced more of them if he hadn't been so intent on cranking them out on an almost yearly basis. I certainly wonder that from time to time, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying his films for what they are.

I, too, thoroughly enjoyed Midnight in Paris, but it's also true that the movie's central idea is completely trite and that Woody Allen's self-indulgence as a filmmaker continues to set new lows.

I thought Owen Wilson's performance was a big part of the movie's charm. Got into a debate recently with someone who thought he was doing a really bad version of Woody Allen. I thought he wasn't even going for that and was (consciously or not) channeling Jimmy Stewart.

I watched Another Woman last night. I still can't get over how good Gena Rowland's performance was. Absolutely great. It was a moving film.
