Ive been admitted to both DePaul University and Ohio State for undergrad as a finance/econ major, but I am having a really hard time deciding between the two. Cost is not a factor as both schools have given me scholarships so the cost is essentially the same. The pros of DePaul are its location/reputation in Chicago especially for business (ranked 40th in country for biz), the greater possibilities for local internships, and smaller class sizes. The pros for OSU are its higher biz ranking (14th in country), greater student resources, and its vast alumni network. I plan on getting a masters degree and/or an mba eventually, so I want to choose the school that will put me in a better position to do so. Please help me decide!

FWIW, you will come across Ohio State alumni EVERYWHERE. There's something like 500K worldwide. Certainly something to consider.

Ohio probably has a wider selection of recruiters who are probably better to pursue a career with.

If you have an address in Chicago then you don't need to worry about local internships and experience, your summers can be spent at home in Chicago (assuming you live there).

Ohio St. is the hands down winner here. OSU's alumini reaches pretty far. It's not a bad sports down during the school year either.

thanks for the feedback, I'm really leaning towards DePaul though, would going there hurt my prospects of grad school or are my chances essentially the same? I know Ohio State is the better ranked and probably known university, but I have always heard that where you attend grad school is more important. Any opinions on this?

Okay then what is your rationale for going to DePaul then?

OSU= better known, more highly regarded, much stronger alumni network, therefore, better job prospects, which is basically paramount for an MBA as I understand it.

As a Michigan man, there is absolutely no way in hell I can ever recommend OSU.

Honestly though, they are both fine choices. I wouldn't worry too much about the differences in rankings, it's not like you are comparing Penn or Harvard to Coastal Carolina Community College.

I think the opportunities for internships and networking within the Chicago area are probably much greater than what you will find in Columbus, even though it is a growing city (as far as the midwest goes anyway). The question is, will the opportunities of Chicago outweigh the reach of the OSU alumni network in the long run?

Conversely, yes, Chicago is a fun town with a lot to do all year round. Great bars, great museums, great music, great sports, a relatively large population of young folks (a lot of students from the Big Ten schools and other places seem to migrate to Chicago for their first jobs after graduation) but there is something to be said about the experience of going to a huge school like OSU - parties (even if their students are jerks) and college sports (even if their teams/coaches are cheaters) will be much more interesting at OSU than DePaul.

When deciding which college I wanted to attend, I was also considering DePual. I actaully stayed there for a night with a friend and thought the night life was terrible. Unless you are 21 or have a fake (which most students did), it was tough to find something to do. Going to a school with an actual campus is a huge benefit and what I was looking for...

Chicago is not a place for an undergrad, since you said you intend on masters/grad school-- save that for Chicago.

Your friend must just be lame...especially around depaul.

That being said...DePaul is kind of ******. I would strongly disagree with chicago not being a place for undergrad if your options included something like UChicago or Northwestern but seriously...OSU has got to be better than a safety school for kids whose parents will pay private tuition for a low-ranked school.
