Hey all,
I’ve recently decided to redo my wardrobe as most of the stuff in it right now is teen cringy clothing and things I can’t really wear out in public now I’m older. I like a vintage streetwear vibe with retro tees and oversized sweatshirts kinda thing. I don’t really know where to start as I’m gonna basically need to start from scratch and with a limitedish budget so no new designer but second hand is an option. I think I should get some basic clean tees and jeans that I can style with other things aswell as maybe a sweatshirt and some jackets / more branded clothing that can be used as accessory pieces. Is this a good idea or does anyone have any ideas on where to start?
Thanks a lot, Elliot

you're going to have to give us some more information about yourself to get any useful advice.

How old are you? Do you have a job and if so, is there any particular style/standard of dress at work? What does a "limitedish" budget mean? The more specific you can be about what you can afford, the better. Where do you live? Do you have access to a lot of physical retailers, or are you limited to online shopping?

Here's what I did, which made the process more sane. I did an inventory of everything I had, I divided into good / workable / bad. Bad stuff went to the thrift shop or clothes recycling. Workable I'm hanging onto, but its days are probably numbered.

Then I came up with a list of things needed. It was way more than I could afford, so I prioritized. The idea was to start with high priority staples that would fit the most important situations. For me this meant clothes to wear to work where I had to look credible (I work in a creative industry, so this isn't suits, but I have to look like I'm not a slob), everyday stuff, and one outfit for more formal occasions.

I got to this point with a few pairs of shoes, a half dozen shirts, 3 casual pants, 1 dress pants, and a blazer. Your mileage will almost definitely vary. But starting small like this let me try it all out and see what was working and what wasn't. Now it's pretty obvious when I need to add to this basic wardrobe, and what to get.

I keep a list ranked by priority. It helps keep me on track so I don't blow money on something I don't really need. Priorities change with the seasons.

Edited to add: this may all sound obvious, but I've never been systematic about it before, and I've always suffered. I'd see something I liked—it looked great on that manikin! And bring it home. Maybe it would look good on me, maybe it wouldn't. But the chance of it actually working with the clothes I already had were slim. So I'd have all these nice but barely wearable orphaned clothes. Really frustrating. Now I'm thinking about what I need, and what's going to work with the other things I have. It keeps me on track; I'm less likely to get seduced by that cool looking but useless whatever.

I went through wardrobe reset almost two years ago. My goal was to level up in quality and look (early 30th, used to shop mall brands only). The approach was as follows:

find appealing looks (e.g. Instagram) ➡ list essential items (bare minimum with what I can leave, the most versatility items) ➡ find out about quality garments (e.g. SF)

I had iterated a couple of times with some adjustments, then began to substitute my wardrobe piece by piece (ditched tees in favour of shirts, sneakers in favour of derbies and so on). So it didn't break the bank. Now I continue to expand my wardrobe slowly with more specific items, colours etc.

Hope it will help
