What can I wear with shorts other than sneakers or loafers?

Based on your preferences what about these lug-sole camp mocs? I personally wouldn't wear something so heavy-looking with shorts but you may feel differently.

You must be joking about Birkenstocks? They are awful - only German tourists wear them here.

Yeah they are a bit dorky but it could work if you play into it. I like the clog version best for men, The Arizona should only be for going to the beach or for women to be honest. Unless you have very pretty feet xD

I like this qute a lot,

But not so much this.. It's okay but honestly a boat shoe or loafer would look better with this fit.

As for advice "don't wear shorts in town" that I read here not once - here it's too common to wear shorts in summer even among older people so I'll look rather unusual by wearing long pants.
The cohort of men who believe "short pants are for schoolboys" are seldom younger than 60 and are fading into the grainy, sepia annals of history. In the dead of summer where I live (NYC area) wearing long pants out during the day is conspicuous enough to look odd.

Shorts are ultra-casual daytime wear in my book, so I don't think one should go through too much effort into dressing them up. I wear New Balance sneakers or Sketchers slip-ons with shorts. Boat shoes are too WASPy, espadrilles are not proper footwear for out of doors, loafers are too dressy, and sandals are unsanitary. And again, if I'm wearing shorts, I'm in an ultra-casual setting. It doesn't really matter what else I'm wearing.

Agree with much of this but chiming in to say that
- I wouldn’t wear sandals or other open-toe footwear in most urban areas for the unsanitary aspect but don’t think it’s a big deal in most other places.
- No espadrilles outside? Think that’s a personal issue but I love espadrilles in the summer.
- YMMV but I have found long pants in loose cuts and very lightweight fabrics to wear cooler than shorts. But I don’t have anything against shorts in the summer.

I'm opining from an urban perspective, espadrilles and sandals really aren't suitable for out-and-about wear in a city. Sandals are just biohazardous, but espadrilles I find aren't substantial enough for walking on pavement for long periods. It's just not what they were designed for. They're woven slippers. For a backyard barbeque or loafing around a pool, both are at home.

A loose-fitting pair of say, linen pants, would be a nice thing to wear in summertime as it provides shade from the sun, and traps that cooler moist air evaporating off your skin while also breathing. I wear worsted wool slacks/trousers to work in the summer and don't find them uncomfortable whatsoever.

I know the thread title says “other than sneakers or loafers” but from your initial post description, I think a Chuck Taylor CT70, in a standard color like black or cream, would fit the bill well here. I particularly think the Low cut version is one of the only sneakers that looks good with shorts, but you can wear High’s even with shorts and then wear them with jeans..

Another choice with a different (yet still ‘classic’ choice) would be a vans slip on; I like the checkerboard ones. Get the PopCush version for extra comfort.

My go to is a pair of driving moccasins, which probably would be classified as a loafer. I’m partial to Tod’s and I have them in green nubuck, navy suede, and tan calfskin. They are fine for walking long miles in Rome, where I lived and traipsed about in them on many hot summer days. Hogan sneakers might be a better alternative. The other options that I can think of have all been mentioned here. And yes, linen shorts are acceptable in Italy these days.

Hiking sandals is one of my alternatives if not espadrilles or loafers. My Chacos are close to 20 years old now that I think about it.

If I know I’m going to walk a long way on a summer’s day I wear, with socks, a pair of hiking shoes - Diemme and Fracap are brands that come to mind - and then, when I reach my destination, discreetly remove the socks, wash my feet and change into loafers!
