Trying to figure out the hairstyle I want

I have grown my hair to about a medium legth (4 inches) and am now trying to figure out how to explain to a hairdresser what I want. I am hoping for a look where the hair is somehow textured to the point of looking like it is a bit curly from a distance. I actually have straight hair, but I cannot find this kind of style in any photos despite googling it to death. I have seen a few guys in the street with this kind of cut in the past bit was unable to stop them and ask.

Can anyone confirm if such a style exists and what kind of terms I should use to explain this to a hairdresser? I guess the cut is not "layered" or anything like that, but I have no idea. Do hairdressers tend to get what you are telling them without a photo? I have mainly been to barbers in the past.
