Trey Parker's suit at the 2011 Tony Awards

So at the Tony Awards in 2011, South Park & Book of Mormon creator Trey Parker wore a pretty unique-looking suit with a black sequined shirt and some sort of banded, priest-ish collar. I've been looking all over for this thing, but can't seem to find anything like it anywhere. I know a lot of people hate it, but I think it's pretty sweet.

It's a Mandarin collar (or a "stand collar") shirt, paired with a sequined scarf tied as an ascot.

Re: NORE's post above about it being a wing collar pressed flat (and pending correction of my guess from someone not simply guessing!) I'd actually surmise that wing collars themselves arose due to the older military stand collar being pressed down at the front for more comfort when turning round (remember, in the military, stand collars were often very heavily starched - and sometimes used in conjunction with a stock - to encourage holding one's head up straight).

You also see this collar style on jackets (sometimes called Nehru collars for the self-explanatory association).

I would have thought a Mandarin collar to have a larger gap and/or rounded/angled edges. I get the "stand collar" approach, tho.

Quote: I believe the tip can be either rounded or straight and still be called a Mandarin collar. However, I have my doubts this was ever codified consistently anywhere. I don't know about the gap.

A stand(-up) collar is certainly a broader/more-inclusive term for this look, I agree.

You will note that I made no comment on that aspect...

the tux is a basic notch lapel tux. where the sleeves are too long.

the shirt is a bit over the top.
the collar is based on a removable collar.

. a stiff stand up. i make these regulatory .. for theater productions.

this collar is the wrong shape for the tips to be turned down.

sometimes the same shape is made as a soft collar and worn with a jabot.

A mandarin collar is shorter in height.. and does not button at the collar but on the front of the shirt.
