Capitalism! People want to be entertained. Also the football coach as a public employee thing is misleading because most college football programs are self sustaining. This graphic would lead people to believe that coaches are being paid with tax dollars.

E is exactly right. That graphic is grossly misleading.

Also, professional sports are probably the purest labor market in the world. They are paid based entirely upon their value to the organization.

Look, if you knew the president of a major southern university system like I do, you'd know they fudge the numbers. /rjpeanut

Had another driving thing I don't get happen yesterday morning. Long stretch of four lane, divided road, speed limit is 50. I'm trundling along at about 55 in the fast lane and I can see a car in the fast lane obviously going much slower. About a dozen car lengths behind it I get into the slow lane, pass, get a dozen car lengths in front of it and go back into the fast lane. I get about 1/2 mile in front and suddenly the driver floors it and starts to ride my tail. I'm not in the mood so I just pull over to the slow lane and slow down to 50. It gets behind me to start tailgating again. WTF? I do not do brake checks, as obviously I lose if a ************* rearends my Benz, so I just took my foot off the gas and coasted down to about 20. Asshole would not go around me. At this point I need to make a left so I get over to the left turn lane, asshole goes screaming by hanging out the window, flipping me the bird.

Seriously, WTF?

you should have just waved back with a happy "today rocks" smile

I smiled and gave him a pinky wave. It seemed to rile him up even more.

Betimes people say to me "Oh man if you ever saw my CD collection (or iTunes collection or whatever), you wouldn't believe your eyes I listen to such a wide variety of music everything from classic country to the dulcet sounds of late baroque oratorio I just got an eclecticism to me nonpareil." I got too much politeness to me I want to say "I probably would believe mine eyes on account of nearly everyone who talks to me at length about music says pretty much the same thing got an eclecticism nonpareil."

I find it hard to stomach the disparity (they are playing a game after all) but there are plenty of strong arguments for why sports stars have healthcare and get paid far more than teachers and minimum wage earners.

There are very few people who can do their jobs. There are probably only a few thousand of them in the country while there are twice as many minimum wage earners within a few miles of me.

At the same time, there are quite a few people willing to shell out money because of how well they do their jobs (its not like the government decided to pay them a ton...tax subsidies aside, that money is coming from the sports-fan public). In fact, there are quite a few minimum wage earners out there who happily spend some of those wages supporting the salaries of pro players (going to games, buying licensed jerseys, buying signature shoes, etc).

pay disparity annoyance is usually negated by the annoyance of those complaining about pay disparity

I think the more important question,
Piob, is "WTF were you doing on his road in the first place?"

Piob drives a Benz. He deserves all the hate he gets and should just take it in stride.

Besides, the real beneficiaries of high pro sports salaries are real estate agents, luxury car dealers, and waitresses and high end clubs.

Its not like those dudes have any money left after they quit playing.

I love people like that, but seriously the best way to deal with it is to smile and wave the next to someone gives you the finger, it winds them right up.

So, I've observed an interesting phenomenon as I've gotten older and people I know have paired off: Somewhere around 30, it becomes the norm for women to marry well beneath their attractiveness. At first I thought it was a money, or marrying a successful older man, thing, but these women all seem to marry guys near their age. (Or maybe I'm looking at it from the wrong gender norm, and these guys are all outkicking their coverage.)

At first I thought it was just my inability to judge dudes based upon their attractiveness, but MrsG agrees that it has become pervasive since my group of (Facebook) friends has turned the 30 corner.

Either way, is this the norm? If so, what causes it? And why don't we have a name for it?
