World cup.... like, why do people act like they don't know what will happen? I mean, you don't know who will win or lose, but you know that SOMEONE will win and someone will lose, so.... to me anyway, the plot is even less existant than a daytime soap opera. its always the same.

People who think sports are dumb are so enlightened and cool. I wish I had more friends who could see through it all and realize everything is pointless and that we shouldn't enjoy anything. Lemmings, the lot of you!

Actually, it works well, but you really need a lot of it--I suggest going to the YMCA to collect a good amount.

Betimes a post shows up in a thread from a poster who's not even listed in "Currently Viewing." Just gives me a fright like nobody's business feel as if I'm receiving communications from the spirit world.

I am the opposite I always pronounce "sport" like a German word (like "Shport") and I always leave off the final s. It gives me a feeling of being better than others (more cultured).

I can't say I think sports are dumb...I don't even hate sports, they can be quite fun to attend and cheer for etc (much like a concert is also fun, or any live outdoor event with thousands of people with one common spectacle)... but I do think that the emphasis that is placed on professional sports in the media is too inescapable to just "accept" as something I "should" be interested in. Not to mention, the salaries of everyone involved are so ridiculous... it really is hard to stomach if you allow yourself to think about it for just a minute... we can't raise minimum wages or provide healthcare to people, but by god that guy who kicks the ball on the tv makes enough to feed an entire improverished nation. Everyone gets a piece of the pie so the salaries have to keep going up and up. So ticket prices go up and up. Where does the money come from? Some from sponsors, yes, but ultimately the fans (consumers who pay the sponsors in the first place through product purchase)...who earn an average wage and try to raise a family. Yeah... it bugs me. The problem is not so much with the sports themselves but this outrageous situation.

That has bugged me for years, the only sport where I can partly understand the salaries is motor sport, as they "pretty much" put their life on the line everyday.

Capitalism! People want to be entertained. Also the football coach as a public employee thing is misleading because most college football programs are self sustaining. This graphic would lead people to believe that coaches are being paid with tax dollars.

E is exactly right. That graphic is grossly misleading.

Also, professional sports are probably the purest labor market in the world. They are paid based entirely upon their value to the organization.
