Terre d'Hermes today. Was a sceptic, now a convert.

Tested Profumum's Ichnusa today. I love the scent, but man, it just does not have any lasting power on me. 4 hours and it's gone, and when a scent costs this much, I need to get more lasting power, no matter how good it smells.

I know Portrait of a Lady is a highly talked about fragrance in this thread. I sprayed once on each forearm and once on my neck and a few people said it was too strong. Is this too much application? Any users out there have any feedback?

POAL is very strong. I think if you held the atomizer farther away when you sprayed, you might get better results. Were you in close proximity to the people who said it was too strong?

Yea I think I need to pull it away when I spray. I was approximately 5 feet away and they said it was too strong. Like offensively strong.

At the end of the day however I had a few people who really said it was fantastic.

Yeah POAL is a one to the chest for me, just like TV and Black Afghano etc.

Oddly enough, I find POAL to have mediocre projection. I must just become anosmic to it, because I've literally had a person chase me down to find out what I was wearing.

Is it true that different skin colors/types will hold fragrance better? Not my observation but I have heard folks with darker skin have better longevity with warmer spicier fragrances. Is that somewhat accurate or a load of nincompoop?

PoAL is sort of infamous for being a projection beast. I'd keep it to one spray (either chest or back of the neck). It's a real 3D experience, wraps you up in LARGE scent cloud.

The most important variable is how moist your skin is. If you have dry skin, your longevity will be less good. If you can find an unscented moisturizer, that will help you hold the scent longer. If there are differences related to skin color, I would guess that those would reduce to differences in levels of moisture.

Also, I have a colleague who likes fragrances, but isn't really a perfumista. She smelled POAL on me and loved it. I told her about surrendertochance.com. She got a sample of POAL, but she was a little bit confused. She asked me, "Are you supposed to dilute the samples? How do you do that?" I explained that no, she shouldn't dilute the samples; she should just apply less.

POAL is a one spray fragrance for sure. One to the base of the neck will suffice.

So I worked in the business as a SA for a couple of years, meaning i smelled many fragrances on many people, and my conclusions, which are just an opinion, are that

1. Yes, there is some skin chemistry involved, but it's not the way you think. It's more like ok 10% of the smell can vary from skin to skin and I didn't really even notice much. It's more the case that if you're someone with difficult/tricky skin, then everything will change 80% when it hits your skin. So yes, there's some variation on everyone, but not much, more like a few people who really make things smell different. Anything from skin acidity/pH, bacteria, previous fragrances from that morning, smoker+diet, even the relative factor of what else and how much else you've been smelling that day, and the fact that the whole department is filled, filled(!) with perfumed air. Also, some people are just lucky. My father holds and project scent beautifully, anything on his skin just lasts 8-10 hours at full volume. I suspect either he sprays too much (it's never too strong though, he's not 'cologne guy'), or sprays on his face (maybe that works?), or it's all the chest hair.

2. Yes, I can actually confirm from experience... light asian and whitey white skin tend to be the trickiest. They may turn fragrances sour or just suck it up. Mediteranean skin to Middle Eastern skin, and colored or black skin, definitely make fragrance just bloom. Darker skin absorbs, blends, and nicely projects out fragrance. Of course it's not always 100% true, just more often than not. To white noses, darker skin, including diet often also strongly stinks too, so it's all relative. And for fcks sake don't message me anything about racism or whatever.
