I suppose comfort could be an argument, but in my case, my shoes are never “uncomfortable”.
Neither are mine, but sneakers ere more comfortable for crazy hot/humid days, like are tongs for the beach or running shoes for sports. Plain colour nice sneakers are most than fine in Europe during summer times miedo with with classic plain colour polos and chinos. Smart enough in no formal senttings. No discussion here. I am evolving on my menswear outfits due to the weather and my job. If you find a polo+chinos+sneakers awful I can't imagine how limited can be your menswear book.
Ps. Sorry for my pic. Clothes are going to the whasing machine.

I do not consider slacks formal tbh.

Polos are casual shirts worn for athletic wear or just every day wear, slacks on the other hand while not formal in the traditional sense, i would consider synonymous with dress pants (as in trousers that are part of a full suit, or odd trousers made with wool, with detailing that makes it more formal then chinos for example) so for me personally its just a clash of formality.

Chinos are very versatile pants: sneakers, boat shoes, driving shoes, T shirts, polos, blazers, long sleeves shirts...you dress up and down. You just need some sense of good taste. But never formal in any setting or traditional/modern sense.
Anyway, to each his own...
